The Griffin School is a rigorous college preparatory high school in Austin’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Griffin students receive a well-rounded liberal arts education that prepares them to be engaged thinkers, communicators and creators. Small classes allow for tailored instruction and meaningful discussion. A deep respect for students’ individuality and freedom of expression helps young learners to grow and thrive both in and outside the classroom. In addition to high-level academics, Griffin is home to one of the city’s most competitive fine arts programs. The school offers intensive courses in creative writing, painting and fashion. Weekly art workshops run the gamut from podcasting and weaving to songwriting. Students can take private music lessons, participate in full-scale theater productions or realize their own artistic visions. Graduates often go on to top art colleges. When they aren’t making art or absorbed in scholarly pursuits, you can find Griffin students playing team sports, enjoying activities like rock climbing, warrior arts and yoga or out in the community while fulfilling the school’s service-learning requirement. Challenging academics paired with a myriad of opportunities for exploration make the Griffin School a leading choice for private education in central Austin.

Fantastic school, if on the expensive end. The school emphasizes individuality and college readiness, and the environment is incredibly welcoming and accepting.

Our Griffin student just graduated this spring and we are glad that she was a part of this community during the pandemic. There was a lot of intention placed around trying to find creative and authentic ways to build community and to keep school as much like school as possible. Overall curriculum was challenging and there are choices for acceleration if you have a child that wants those opportunities (such as AP classes). There has been a successful attempt to build up the athletics program and several recent students have been recruited for college teams in Cross Country and Track. My student found a wide range of club options and the music and art instruction is above and beyond what you might expect from a small school. There is a lot of flexibility and acceptance for students to be who they need to be.

I recently graduated from Griffin and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I had. I transferred to Griffin in the middle of my high school career so I was there for my junior and sophomore year and I don't regret a thing. The teachers and faculty are so amazing and they want to have personally connections with each student. The environment was so welcoming and understanding. I fit right in. When I was having a bad day, I felt safe and let my teachers know and they were very understanding about missed work and we made reasonable plans to get it done. The is school fosters growth and community, and my only regret is not going there sooner. - Natasha F
