Lamar Middle School is a public middle school serving students in sixth through eighth grades in the Allandale neighborhood of North Austin. Home to one of Austin Independent School District’s few middle school fine arts academies, Lamar offers students a robust program in a wide range of creative interests including visual arts, dance, band, orchestra, choral music, drama, classical guitar, digital arts and media, as well as the nationally recognized Lamar Jazz Band. The campus first opened in 1955 and currently educates over 700 students. Academic test performance is perennially above average, and gifted and talented programs, multilingual education, dyslexia services and special education are all offered. The academic curriculum follows the standards of the district, grounded in the implementation of three initiatives: whole child, literacy and the transformative use of technology. Lamar Scotties compete in a wide variety of athletics including basketball, football, soccer, cross country and even archery. There are several student clubs to choose from including a science club, student council and Dungeons & Dragons. There is even a student literary magazine for budding young poets and authors. The school’s mission is to provide a caring community with diverse programs that engage all students in meaningful and creative learning opportunities to prepare them for the future. Most Lamar Scotties attend McCallum High School after graduating.

My daughter attended for part of a year. She loved her teachers. But she was bullied mercilessly and with witnesses and the bullies didn’t appear to feel repercussions and continued. She had to be the one to leave.
