In the middle of the Westside neighborhood, you’ll find Burke High School, home of the Bulldogs. This public school serves 372 students and offers public transportation, although many students choose to walk due to its convenient location. With ideal class sizes at a 9:1 student-teacher ratio, students are given the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to education which gets them ready for graduation. With many local businesses in the area, several graduates decide to stay in Charleston and work in the industries they grew up around. The high school offers 10 sports throughout the year and stays connected with the neighborhood through events like the Mighty Bulldogs versus Charleston Police Department basketball game. Students also have the opportunity to participate in clubs and other after-school activities, which instills leadership and community involvement. The Burke Bulldogs have a rich history in Charleston, as the school was established in 1894 by Rev. John L. Dart and continues to serve students today. The school was originally created to help students learn life skills in addition to common core subjects, a mission it continues to fulfill today.

Burke High School is full of nothing but thick culture and fun experience's. Being here there are lots of sports, lots of people to connect with and opportunities for a higher education. The only downfall is that there is little parent involvement in the school unless it's alumni.

I like that Burke is an overall progressive school. I would like to see better disciplinary actions towards the disrespectful individual at this school. My experience over all has been amazing.

Burke High School is a family-like environment. The teachers encourage all students to try hard and do their best. The classes could be challenging, but our destination is graduation. In Burke, anything could be done, if you believe then you could achieve and that's our school motto.

I actually really like this school. I feel like ethnicity nor income should downgrade a school. This is my first year attending Burke High School. No, I am not 'Black'. Yes, there are some disrespectful children at this school but their are also intelligent children like myself with high GPA's. atte...
