Tarkington School of Excellence is an elementary school that serves nearly 1,000 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. While a Chicago Public School, management of Tarkington was given to the Academy for Urban School Leadership in 2005. The academy transformed the school into a training ground for teachers to prepare them for challenging urban schools. Since then, Tarkington has been working to provide students with a safe learning environment that maintains high standards and expectations. The institution has earned Chicago Public School’s Level 1 designation, which means it is one of the city’s highest performing schools. Tarkington’s current building was constructed in 2005 and was the first Chicago Public School building built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines. The school features plants growing on the roof, channels that direct stormwater runoff to the nearby Marquette Park lagoon instead of the sewers to reduce the load on the system, and lights that are automatically adjusted based on the amount of daylight coming into the space.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

The teachers were a very great impact during my years of attending here. I learned things about myself that helped me get to where I am. It was a great start for me.

The school, overall, was a good school. I attended when I was back in 3rd grade when it was barely new. However, they didn't do good with bullying, as I was one of the few who often times go bullied. They also don't do well with emotional people.

This was a terrible school. I just left that school a month ago and I got bullied for over three years and the school didn’t do anything. The principal didn’t know what to do, there broke, and it’s just terrible.

This is a great school and the teachers are exceptional! They take their time to assist each student individually. I like that even the lower grades get to experience changing classes and they are preparing for middle/high school. The building is a newer building and I like that the school is situat...

I have a son finishing his kindergarten year here and I love this school. The staff is great and he really has learned a lot since starting here!

My child currently attends Tarkington School of Excellence. I do agree that the school is a terrible school. My son has been in the school since Pre K. The teachers lack all the essential skills that are needed to be a teacher. Also at no point was I informed that thiswas a Spanish based school. I r...
