Sierra High School is a public alternative school in the Fillmore Unified School District. Since 1980, Sierra has been providing a unique and supportive educational experience to students in ninth through twelfth grades. Students attend Sierra High School for a number of reasons. Some may be deficient in credits or want to accelerate, while others have not experienced success in a conventional high school setting. Students are required to earn the same 230 credits to graduate as they do at Filmore High School; however, because the school operates on a quarterly system, they can potentially earn an additional 40 credits per year. Additional online classes are available through Cyber High. In the afternoon, students have the option of attending dual-credit, career technical education classes and band at Fillmore High School. Behind Sierra’s success rate is a commitment to providing a climate that fosters a sense of community among students within a small school setting. With around 59 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1, Sierra’s four teachers are able to offer personal attention and cooperative learning. Traditions at the school include quarterly awards ceremonies, end-of-year BBQ and a graduation ceremony.
