The first intermediate school in the Alief Independent School District, Owens Intermediate School opened its doors in August 1994. In a nod to its location at 6900 Turtlewood Dr., the school has a large brass turtle sculpture leading up to the entrance, but its mascot is the jaguar. Home of about 1,000 5th-6th-grade Jaguars, Owens offers its students an outstanding fine arts program. Led by a superhero teacher, orchestra students perform two major concerts and year and compete in many local festivals. In art class, they learn to think like artists. They can experiment with various media and styles and choose what they want to create. Although Owens students’ test scores are well below the state average, they’re making above-average academic progress compared to where they were the year before. And the Alief school district is investing in every child’s academic success with its 1:1 device program. In this program, every child in grades 3-12 has the exclusive use of a technological device such as a Chromebook. Parents and guardians pay a small fee for insurance so there are no worries about accidentally breaking the computer. The 1:1 program offers equitable access to cutting-edge technology and tools. As an added bonus, students can learn outside of Owens’ walls and hours.
