"Sankofa is a word from the Ghanaian language. It's also a mythical bird that represents looking back at your past and then taking that information to propel your future." This statement came from Tihesha Henderson, the principal of Arlington Woods School 99 and founder of the non-profit organization Sankofa School of Success. Sankofa at AWS is a public school in the Indianapolis Public Schools district teaching children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The elementary school converted to an Innovation Network School in 2020 and operates under Sankofa to improve students' performance with community support. Henderson was honored with the 2022 IPS Principal of the Year award for her achievement in identifying ways to excel students in becoming well-rounded individuals. The Sankofa model uses past, successful strategies and a new approach to social and emotional learning to advance students' development. Students grasp mindful techniques through project usage in therapeutic and sensory rooms. The projects help them achieve goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships and make responsible decisions in life. After-school activities also aid in building teamwork and social skills. Athletics are available in football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball and track & field. The 38 teachers at Sankofa continuously go through professional development opportunities to advance in skills that help its 484 students grow emotionally and academically. The classrooms are implemented with the best practices in curriculums to provide high-quality education. Sankofa achieves its mission to create a safe and nurturing environment that meets students' academic, social and emotional needs through mastery of learning, mindfulness and rigorous education.

And the teachers had no type of control! I h...

We have 5 or 6 teachers who have been here for 15 Yeats and jave seen the best and the worst this school has been through but because we are a strong connected group and we start our day together in faith, we continue to strive to make every child...
