The community school of Isabella Bird, home of the dragons, was founded by Sonny Zinn, and Traci and Jeff Bushnell in 2013. The school is named after the English explorer, author, and naturalist Isabella Lucy Bird and is part of the Denver Public School system, serving early childhood education students through fifth grade. Bird traveled the globe three times with 800 miles on horseback through the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The hope in the community school’s name is to inspire future dreamers and explorers. Isabella Bird Community School is granted innovative status, which allows them opportunities that are not granted in other traditional schools. Meaning, freedom of choice in curriculum design and a school council made up of parents, teachers, and community leaders. Courses and programs offered at Isabella Bird include multilingual education, gifted and talented programs, special education, art and music, and physical education. At Isabella Bird, also referred to as Izzi B, every grade level focuses on different real-world academic content, including beginning development, communication, systems, relationships, perspectives, cause and effect, and transformations. With Izzi B’s curriculum, every student learns to make connections, think critically, deal with complex texts and ideas, and resonate with the significance of what they learn.

Our three kids attended Isabella Bird. We love the direction of the school and the leadership in place starting last year. The school has a great community and every teacher is certified in gifted learning. There are teachers that have been there from the beginning that love the kids and the school. Our youngest is still there and she's had a great experience including the aftercare program that makes their early release much easier on a working family.

We have a kindergarten currently at Izzi B and have been very impressed by the communication from the staff and PTCO on the events, activities and classroom learning. The teachers are caring and supportive, and create a wonderful learning atmosphere where our 5 year is excited to go on a daily basis...
