Centrally located in Montecito Heights at the base of a hill, Glen Alta Elementary came into existence as settlers from the East Coast began arriving in the neighborhood. Established in 1890, the school serves about 150 students from kindergarten to eighth grade.
With the school being so small, it groups some grades, such as first and second. This grouping allows students to spend two years with one teacher and encourages a stronger relationship between learners and the staff. Glen Alta hosts different events that include Career Day, Dr. Seuss Day and Literacy Night. The school also has a transitional kindergarten class for pre-K students.
Afterschool programs give students homework help, arts and crafts activities and outdoor recreation. As part of the LA’s Best program, students can participate in performing arts, science and sports clubs.
The school’s interior includes an open-air courtyard with shrubs and trees. Glen Alta’s recreational facilities provide the student body with playgrounds, several paved areas and a track.
