On a parklike campus dotted with plenty of trees, Orangewood Elementary enrolls close to 1,000 students in pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade as part of the Washington Elementary School District in Phoenix. Here, the faculty and staff honor a mission “to prepare students to become literate, creative, responsible, lifelong learners in partnership with families and the community.” Outside of the core curriculum, the school hosts computer classes, a robotics club, an environmental club, as well as Native American programs and school field trips. Students also can thrive in electives and extracurriculars, ranging from band and choir to yearbook and even participation in annual Broadway Jr. musicals. For the more active set, children can compete in girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, coed soccer, cross country, track, or girls’ softball. To help foster better well-being, Orangewood hosts KidSpace, which is a before- and after-school care program (for a fee), offers tutoring and counseling services, and provides free breakfast and lunch for all students. Not only is Orangewood School committed to helping its students grow academically, but the school also helps them to grow socially. The many activities and extracurriculars offered encourage students to make those interpersonal relationships and form long-lasting friendships.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I enjoyed teaching the students at Orangewood and working with most of the other staff. The educators do their best to ensure a quality learning experience for the students. I had quite a few negative experiences while teaching that caused me to leave and give it three stars. I was asked to stay as a staff member. There are many good people at Orangewood, so I do not want to detail my circumstances since they were highly unusual.
