As part of the Alhambra Elementary School District, Valencia Newcomer School offers support and education for students in full-day kindergarten through eighth grade who have recently begun living in the United States. The school’s mission includes helping students and their families adapt to America by supporting social skills, English language proficiency, intercultural communication, and inclusiveness. Here, the faculty focus on individualized, small group instruction to give students more one-on-one attention than they might receive at other schools. Beyond standard subjects, students also learn about setting goals, minding their health, thinking positively, and focusing on daily self-improvement. In addition to core teaching staff, the school also has a literacy coach and outreach coordinator to provide extra support for transitioning students and families. Valencia Newcomer hosts a number of community partnerships to assist all those it serves, including programs with Girl Scouts of America, the Be Kind Project, RISE Tutoring from Arizona State University, PC’s for Refugees, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Beth El Church, and the Welcome to America Project. With all of the numerous resources offered, this school is the ideal place for those who are seeking a smooth and well-supported transition to the new country in which they now reside.
