Designing a curriculum that guarantees success for every student isn’t easy. Students are different. They have different interests and abilities, and they learn in different ways. A one-size-fits-all curriculum doesn’t always work. That’s where 360 High School comes in. 360 High School opened in 2018 as an alternative to the traditional one-size-fits-all curriculum. From the beginning, the school was designed with the input of faculty, community organizations and students. At 360 High School, students work with faculty to create a unique learning plan that takes into account their individual abilities, passions and learning style. This means students work at their own pace and have a variety of options to demonstrate what they’ve learned. This could mean taking a test, or it could mean giving a presentation or building a model. Students meet regularly with their teachers to go over their daily, weekly and annual goals, with discussions focused on how to achieve these goals, expectations and progress. Involving students in the process generates excitement, motivation and successful learning. 360 High School enrolls approximately 300 students. All students receive a Chromebook to help them with their schoolwork. A special feature of 360 High School is the participation of community partners in the classroom — for instance, a coding class co-taught by Brown University computer science students. Extracurricular activities, including field trips, are available, as are clubs, athletics and student council.
