Officially known as "The Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr. & Charlotte Woods Elementary School at the B. Jae Clanton Complex," those more familiar with the school just refer to it as “Young Woods,” after two of the school’s namesakes, Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr., and Charlotte Woods. Today, the school serves 550 students, and boasts an overarching goal of meeting the needs of each and every student as well as provide a fun, safe, and respectful learning environment. "Be WISE!" is Young Woods' motto, which is an acronym for "Well-behaved, Industrious, Safe and Empathetic.” Notably, Young Woods was honored recently by the governor of Rhode Island, the state’s department of education, and the Providence public school district for its pre-K program, which was rated 5 stars from BrightStars, a quality rating and improvement agency. It was the first school in the district to receive a five-star rating. Young Woods prides itself on being community minded, in part because of the work done by the school’s namesakes and also because teachers and administrators truly believe that the work they do matters. School activities, from Field Days to Clean-Up Days, deepen each student’s convictions that Young Woods has their best interests at heart.
