Founded in 1971, Pluralistic School One (PS1) is a private, co-ed, independent elementary school for kindergarten through sixth grade students. The school is made up of approximately 210 pupils who attend multi-age classes combining two years and are limited in size to fewer than 25 students. PS1’s student-to-faculty, staff and administration ratio is 5-to-1. The school’s founding value of pluralism is the belief that a community is enriched when individual differences are respected and welcomed, building upon a child’s passions, interests, talents, personal expressions and uniqueness, as highlighted in this quote from A.A. Milne: “The things that make me different are the things that make me.” The PS1 program nurtures children's social-emotional development, creativity and interconnectedness in the school’s community and curriculum. It builds a healthy foundation for character by encouraging children to find their voices and advocate for themselves from a young age. Weekly "circle times" help them become comfortable with communication, public speaking and collaboration. PS1 allocates 19.5 percent of tuition income to financial aid. The school’s award-winning sustainable campus in the heart of Santa Monica offers indoor and outdoor education spaces for each classroom, with service-learning projects at all grade levels. PS1’s aftercare includes enrichment classes and play activities.

We love that our child has retained her joy of learning throughout her journey at PS1. She is stretched and challenged every day as a whole person. She is encouraged to embrace a growth mindset and not to be afraid of making mistakes. The teachers and staff have been phenomenal partners in guiding us along the way to support our child. We feel grateful every day to be part of the engaged and involved parent community.

PS1 is an amazing community. The kids all learn from one another no matter the age from mixing during recess, lunch and aftercare. The teachers are amazing. My son absolutely loves this school. He started out shy and reserved and has really blossomed into a confident kid that can express his views and listen to others.

My son has been at this school for 3 years now and we have had a wonderful experience! The classes are small, the teachers are wonderful. My son loves learning, he is excited to go to school every day. PS1 is nurturing and inspires confidence in shy kids. I also love the diversity. We are a two mom...

As a PS1 parent, I can confidently say this school is a hidden gem. From the moment we joined, we felt welcomed into an incredibly warm, tight-knit community that has become an anchor for our entire family. Our daughter has now been at PS1 for two years, and every single day when I pick her up, she...

This is a wonderful school with a pluralistic outlook (that's what the "P" stands for), meaning that they see each child as both highly individual and also part of the collective whole. My two boys have flourished here: They feel celebrated for being themselves, while also pushed to stretch in place...

I remember touring PS1 as we were assessing elementary schools. All I could think was, "when you know, you know". We immediately fell in love with the school, and knew that it would be the best fit for our boys. Hearing about the philosophy, and how they respect each child and want them to be their...
