Located in West San Jose, John Muir Elementary is a public school within the Cupertino Union School District. Opening its doors in 1957, the institution is named after John Muir, a famous nature writer born in the United Kingdom. He immigrated to California and became a naturalist, authoring many books on the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park. He also founded the Sierra Club in 1892, which is still active today.
Muir Elementary is considered modest in size, serving around 250 students. It currently has a student-to-teacher ratio of 24-to-1, slightly higher than the rest of the school district. This school has the first Mandarin Language Immersion Program of an elementary school in the state of California, which was established in 1991. The kids here are horrible to each other, and many are downright bullies. Once you meet the parents it's pretty easy to see where it originates. There are some great teachers there that care, but many that should not be teaching.
