Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter school enrolls students from transitional kindergarten to fifth grade, and has educated children since 1924. In the last decade, the public school opted to become a charter school to receive more autonomy regarding curriculum, budget, hiring staff and governance, but the school is still affiliated with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Located on residential Greenleaf Street, just south of Ventura Boulevard, it’s easily accessed from major freeways. The school services the Sherman Oaks neighborhoods on the surrounding streets, such as Greenleaf, Dickens, Benefit, Sutton and Valley Vista. Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter School also educates students living in the neighboring areas of Van Nuys, Studio City and Encino. The school’s vision is to ensure all students reach their maximum potential through academics, social emotional development and diverse enrichment programs. The school’s sports mascot is the Tiger, and to show appreciation for “Tiger Pride” uniting the student body, on every first Friday of the month, students are encouraged to wear their Tiger T-shirts and participate in a school spirit contest, with the goal of winning prizes. Besides academics, students can participate in community clean-up programs, a Halloween carnival, spring dances, music appreciation week, theme days that emphasize school spirit, Hispanic heritage month, movie nights, ice cream days, talent shows and a character assembly that emphasizes school attendance and leadership.

We hoped this would be a great school -it's a pretty great neighborhood. We have had a couple of great teachers, but many of the teachers are older and some definitely seem tired of teaching (only 5% of teachers are 1st or 2nd year.) After 3 years I have found several to be impatient and even unkind. 1st and [especially] 2nd grade children facing impatient and often annoyed teachers is a discouraging environment at such a critical time. Academic scores speak for themselves.. not great (and some of the report cards have appeared thrown together or incomplete and not always reflecting the child at all.) The "free" after school supervision program is completely unsafe...bullying, etc.

This is our first year at SOEC and we couldn't be happier. I have a 2nd grader and Special Needs PAL Preschool student enrolled. Everyone at the school is amazing, from the teachers to the aides, to the playground aides, and of course the Principal. The school ensures all parents are informed of sch...

The leadership and teachers care about the students and work hard to get each student what they need. There are community events (ice cream, movie night) that bring everyone together. The kids enjoy the school and enjoy going!

SOEC is a pretty good school. The weakest part is the front office. If the school had a group of front office workers that enjoyed their jobs and were kind to parents and students, it would make a HUGE difference. The front office ladies (2 of the 3) always seems overwhelmed and frustrated. Their at...

We've had a great three years at SOEC. Our daughter had come from a Montessori Elementary school and went through a period of adjustment but has thrived ever since. Really loved the teachers that she's had and everyone there is communicative and warm.
