St. James Parish Day School introduces young children to education with a developmental approach to learning through play. The school enrolls children from 3 years old through kindergarten in eight classrooms on the grounds of St. James Episcopal Church, its church affiliate.
Chapel is offered to the children weekly, and they are given the basic tenets of Christianity in 15 minute sessions. The church courtyard has ample tree canopies providing shade for outdoor teaching and play sessions. St. James holds 30 minute classes with a mix of academic and enrichment subjects: Spanish, science, yoga and cultural dance, music and rhythm, and art, including directed drawing.
The school’s philosophy sees children’s spontaneous play with puppets, coloring pictures, snack time and other creative activities as providing valuable lessons in social and motor skills. St. James is an accredited early learning center whose teachers are experienced and regularly update their training.
At the corner of Monterey Road and Fremont Avenue, St. James is in a section of South Pasadena, where several other public and parochial schools are also located. Many parents walk to or from school for drop-off, taking the opportunity to bond with their young students.
