An authentic Austin neighborhood with local shops and restaurants
Many Austinites wax nostalgic about how the city used to be weird, wonderful and hyper-local. While much of the city has changed, Austin natives know there’s one neighborhood that has persevered: North Loop. “Those in the know, know,” says Emily Waldmann, a Realtor with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “North Loop is a really cool pocket that’s kept the old Austin weird and local vibe. It feels very authentic Austin.” Eccentric, free-spirited and one-of-a-kind, this community consists of longtime Keep Austin Weird-era locals, University of Texas students and staff, young professionals and families who enjoy the endless array of amazing restaurants and vintage stores within walking distance.
Great eats on Airport Boulevard
North Loop is packed to the gills with local restaurants, mom and pop shops and vintage stores. Residents can start (or end) their day at the 24/7 Epoch Coffee shop. Home Slice Pizza is a neighborhood staple and gathering place lauded for its New York-style pizza and kids’ play area. Neighborhood favorites line Airport Boulevard, such as JewBoy Burgers, a beloved diner serving up burgers inspired by Mexican and Jewish cultures. When it’s time for a nightcap, locals go to the divey Workhorse Bar or the intimate Tigress Pub. Vintage lovers rejoice at shops like Room Service Vintage, Blue Velvet and Breakaway Records. There’s also an H-E-B on East 41st Street.
Bungalows and new builds
Potential homebuyers can expect a mix of condos, ranch-style homes, bungalows and new builds. A two-bedroom condo can cost $280,000 while a two-bedroom bungalow can cost $575,000. Freshly-built Craftsman-inspired homes can range from $650,000 to $1.8 million.
Highly rated schools in the Austin Independent School District
Kids can attend Ridgetop Elementary School before moving onto Lamar Middle School, both of which are graded A-minus by Niche. From there, students can progress to McCallum High School, an A-graded school and one of the top 10 high schools for the arts in Texas.
Less than 6 miles from downtown Austin
North Loop is close to Interstate 35, a major Austin corridor. “What’s nice about North Loop is you want a car (to travel to) Austin, but then you can walk to coffee shops then to a vintage store and walk home,” Waldmann says. North Lamar Boulevard and Airport Boulevard are two main thoroughfares for the neighborhood. The area is less than 6 miles from downtown Austin and the University of Texas and about 12 miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Walkable and bikeable streets
Residents enjoy walking and biking along the streets of North Loop. Parents can take their kids to Shipe Neighborhood Park on Avenue G to play on the playground or cool off at the pool on hot summer days. Across the street is the Elisabet Ney Museum, the historic home and studio of the namesake German sculptor who moved to Austin in 1882. The museum and the park connect via the Elisabet Ney Museum Trail. Shoal Creek is north of the neighborhood and has walking and biking paths. The neighborhood is also close to Q2 Stadium, home to the Austin FC Major League Soccer team.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

My wife and I recently purchased a home in this neighborhood and have loved it. We were drawn here in large part thanks to the proximity to so many great amenities as well as the very friendly and community-oriented feel and soul of the neighborhood.
