Residential suburb filled with city perks
Living in Berkeley, residents get the peacefulness of a suburban lifestyle and the excitement of city amenities. Only 5 miles from Downtown Denver, the neighborhood is filled with walkable streets and upscale homes. “I like Berkeley because it’s a really unique neighborhood community, with its various parks, shopping on Tennyson and proximity to Downtown, Regis and Interstate 70. It’s uniquely situated, and you get a lot of diversity from the city,” says Realtor Nick DiPasquale with West and Main Homes, who also serves on the Market Trends Committee for the Denver Metro Association of REALTORS®. Residents are right around the corner from an abundance of unique shops, restaurants, historical entertainment venues and neighborhood parks that keep the community active.

Shopping and dining on Tennyson Street
Dozens of locally owned shops and restaurants line Berkeley’s main thoroughfare, Tennyson Street. The area’s modern, chic buildings are a reflection of the area’s trendy atmosphere. “When people talk about Berkeley, they talk about Tennyson. You’ve got clothing stores, jewelers and great restaurants and bars. There are all kinds of things to do there,” DiPasquale says. Residents can spend the day browsing boutiques like Lariat and novelty shops like Miller Lane Mercantile. Stop for a quick cup of coffee at Huckleberry Roasters or sit down at Cozy Cottage for a Mexican-inspired breakfast meal. Other daytime restaurants along the strip include Lucy’s Burger Bar and Hops & Pie, a casual pizzeria with craft beers. Residents 21 and up can enjoy the area’s brewery scene and late-night bars. The Empourium Brewing Company has an outdoor patio and live music on the weekends. When it comes to shopping for groceries, the thoroughfare also has Natural Grocers and Sprouts Market. Head down West 44th Avenue for Safeway. Those in the mood for fast food or chain restaurants can find plenty along West 38th Avenue.

Berkeley’s entertainment venues and attractions
In addition to the retail and restaurants along Tennyson Street, there are several entertainment options for residents to enjoy. The historic Oriental Theater was built in the 1920s and now operates as a popular live music venue. Another neighborhood landmark is the Historic Elitch Theater. What once started out as a garden and amusement park in 1890 continues to shine as a performing arts center that also puts on outdoor films during the summer. At the northwestern edge of the neighborhood, Lakeside Amusement Park is fun for all ages with its rollercoasters and seasonal attractions.

Beautiful and spacious homes
Berkeley’s residential roads are lined with a variety of different housing options. The gridded streets are expansive and spacious, allowing properties to have nice lawns and mature trees surrounding them. Dutch Colonials and luxury bungalows are popular, ranging from 1,300 to 2,000 square feet and priced anywhere between $500,000 and $1.3 million. These single-family homes come with features such as stone walls, front porches and dormer windows. Contemporary two-story houses with modern architecture can get as large as 3,800 square feet and as expensive as $2M for a newly built property. Those who want alternative housing plans can find two-story townhouses and duplexes scattered throughout the neighborhood. “There was a mass development spree of townhouses on Tennyson a couple of years ago,” DiPasquale adds. These luxury spaces range from $1.1 to $1.4 million. There are also condominiums and apartment complexes closer to Tennyson Street.

When the weather is nice, those parks are packed,” DiPasquale says. The neighborhood’s namesake park has a lake that’s great for fishing. Visitors can walk along the trails surrounding Berkeley Lake to get their steps in. Play with pups at the leashless dog park, explore the playground area or practice on the tennis courts. Scheitler Recreation Center’s indoor facilities include a fitness studio, outdoor pool, pickleball court and more. Across the neighborhood, Rocky Mountain Park also has a lake for water recreation, plus walking trails and a baseball field. Other smaller parks in the area with outdoor amenities include Casar Chavez Park and McDonough Park.

It's a safe city, and getting better all the time. It's still a city, though. There is still crime. However, as long as you are aware of your situation and surroundings, and are somewhat familiar with the city and its areas, you will rarely feel unsafe.
