In the Campbell Union School District, Capri Elementary and Rolling Hills Middle School are public charter schools rated B-plus and A-minus, respectively. San Tomas Park – the neighborhood’s namesake – is a 4.8-acre outdoor space with two playgrounds, paved walking paths, two basketball courts and an open field area. Residents can also use a convenient pedestrian bridge that crosses a busy highway to walk to the 32-acre John D. Morgan Park, where coniferous trees tower over walking trails, little league fields and picnic areas. Morehead-Crum says that many people who live in this area use the nearby Los Gatos Creek Trail for outdoor recreation activities like biking and running; this pedestrian-only trail system starts far south of the neighborhood at the Lexington Reservoir and travels up to downtown San Jose.Westgate Center indoor mall is only 1.5 miles away
San Tomas Aquinos residents have convenient access to three grocery stores: Grocery Outlet, Safeway supermarket and Nob Hills Foods at the commercial Kirkwood Plaza, which also features a Big 5 Sporting Goods store. Neighborhood restaurants include L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, a national chain eatery that serves traditional Hawaiian cuisine. Just outside the neighborhood along Hamilton Avenue is Hash House, a popular breakfast and lunch diner with signature mimosas and Blood Marys. Less than 2 miles from the neighborhood is the Westgate Center, a massive indoor shopping mall that houses dozens of fashion retailers, chain eateries and department stores like Target and T.J. Maxx. Across from the indoor mall is another commercial area home to Ulta Beauty, PetCo, REI and the AMC Saratoga 14 movie theater. According to Morehead-Crum, residents frequently go to downtown Campbell to shop, dine and pick up fresh produce from the city’s popular farmers market.Driving is the preferred transit method in San Tomas Aquinos
“Most people who live in this area use their own cars to get places,” Morehead-Crum says. “But there are public transit options.” Campbell Avenue is a busy main road that cuts through the center of San Tomas Aquinos, lined with bus stops for routes operated by the Valley Transportation Authority. Commuters can also make the 2-mile drive to the downtown Campbell light rail station, where they can hop on the Green Line and travel into downtown San Jose, which sits approximately 6 miles away. Adjacent to the neighborhood are two major thoroughfares: the San Tomas Expressway and the Norman Y. Mineta Highway, which both connect to Interstate 280. San Jose Mineta International Airport is a 10-mile drive north, while the Good Samaritan Hospital and its 24-hour emergency services are approximately 5 miles south.
