Trails, golf and a nature center on the banks of the American River

Popular among joggers, dog-walkers and bird-watchers, Ancil Hoffman Park encompasses almost 400 acres of dirt trails and picnic areas along the American River. Mature oak trees shade the riverbanks, where locals can access the water. “In the summer, the river’s packed with rafts and you can go fishing for salmon and steelhead,” says Craig Diez, local Realtor with 30 years of experience in Carmichael and owner of Diez & Sigg Properties. “You don’t feel like you’re in the middle of the city. It’s more of a rural feeling.” The park also has a public 18-hole golf course and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, which hosts summer camps, clubs and other programs. There are several smaller parks on the neighborhood’s west side. Shelfield Park has playgrounds and tennis courts, while Glancy Oaks and Cardinal Oaks parks each have large grass fields and walking paths shaded by oak trees.

Shopping on Fair Oaks Boulevard and dining at the Milagro Centre

Fair Oaks Boulevard is the main commercial drag, lined with auto shops, antique stores and Mexican restaurants like Cantina Azteca. The Milagro Centre, an indoor food court at the corner of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Marconi Avenue, has become a burgeoning community and culinary hub with seven counter-service eateries and a large seating area. “We didn’t use to have big areas to hang out, but the Milagro Centre is helping us create more of a community identity,” Diez says. “You run into people that you see around town. It’s very friendly.” River City Brewing Company is a staple within the center, offering a rotating seasonal menu of sandwiches, flatbreads and house brews. Nearby supermarkets include the locally owned Sana Market & Bakery and Grocery Outlet.
