Scioto Woods
‘90s styles just south of Trabue Road
“Neighbors pretty much keep to themselves. The area is nice and quiet, with a few parks and just some easy places to hang out. It’s pretty relaxed,” says Columbus Realtor Thomas Hamrick, who grew up in the area. Wide streets lined on either side by quarter-acre lots and well-maintained contemporary houses with pale siding and gabled roofs make up the north portion of the neighborhood. Homebuyers can find three-to-four-bedroom family homes built in the ‘90s just south of Trabue Road and the Raymond Memorial Golf Course. These homes cost around $250,000 to $500,000 compared to older homes on the southern side of Scioto Woods. Vinyl and wood-sided bungalows and ranches built in the 80s cost around $200,000, though residents can find condominiums in similar styles at $80,000.Food trucks and summer hangouts at Scioto Woods Park
The abundance of trees and the flowing creeks in Scioto Woods has given locals a scenic getaway from the hustle of nearby Columbus for over three decades. Scioto Woods is a focal point of the neighborhood. This 9-acre park not only has a playground, picnic tables, and a small shelter but also serves as a gathering spot in the summer, where a variety of food trucks roll up weekly from May to October. A paved walking trail connects the various portions of the park. Redick Park offers another 24 acres of recreational spaces with walking trails that wind through woods and along the creeks in the area, and a large field to the south hosts a baseball diamond, a basketball court and an athletics center. Golf enthusiasts can head north to Trabue Road’s Raymond Memorial Golf Course, a popular and unique course built by the famous golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. This 50-year-old course features 18 holes and several junior golf programs to further the skills of young golfers. Locals along El Paso Road and just to the west of the neighborhood can find several churches of differing Christian denominations, as well as Guru Nanak Religious Society Sikh Temple.Shopping and Dining along Wilson Road
Bordered by Wilson Road and Trabue Road, Scioto Woods locals are no stranger to the variety of restaurants offered, even in the small suburbs of Columbus. “There’s not a lot of places you can walk to, but Trabue is probably one of the more popular roads for bars,” says Hamrick. Fairweathers Cafe is one such bar that is almost never empty. Locals come for the atmosphere and stay for the drinks. While the bar doesn’t usually serve food, events throughout the year bring patrons in for tasty snacks and happy hours, especially for the Ohio State Buckeye football games. Wilson Road has plenty of eateries, like Twin Sunlight, with its friendly staff and Chinese food or Minelli’s Pizza and its piping hot Italian cuisine. Further down Wilson Road, residents can grab essential groceries from Kroger. Music lovers and aspiring artists can book with Radio City Records within the neighborhood to use its professional recording studio. Two school districts and a top-rated charter school
Scioto Woods is districted between Hilliard City Schools and South-Western City Schools, leaving plenty of options for locals. For those in Hilliard’s district, students can start at the B-rated Horizon Elementary School, before moving on to Hilliard Memorial Middle School and Hilliard Bradley High School, both rated B-plus on Niche. Those within South-Western City Schools can attend the C-minus rated Valleyview Elementary School and Westmoor Middle School before moving on to Westland High School, rated C-plus. Columbus Preparatory Academy is a kindergarten through twelfth grade public charter school within the neighborhood. It’s rated the most diverse middle and high school in Ohio by Niche and earns a score of A alongside a ranking as the top public charter school in Ohio. Teaching just over 800 students, the school focuses on career and skill development throughout each grade level and has a college preparation-focused curriculum.Convenience of Columbus in 7 miles
Bordered by Interstate 70 to the south, Scioto Woods has easy access to downtown Columbus 7 miles down the road. The area is extremely car-dependent, and there are no stops for Columbus’ public transportation system, the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA). There is a Greyhound bus station down Wilson Road, and John Glenn International Airport is 14 miles away.
