A highly desired Long Beach neighborhood
Alamitos Heights: where children play in front lawns, neighbors stroll under towering palm trees, and many choose to settle down. “Everyone wants to move to Alamitos Heights. It's very family-friendly, and the lots are bigger for more elbow room. It’s very walkable; everyone’s out walking their dogs,” says Realtor Craig Wallace who works with Think Boutiq and has over a decade of experience in the area. Although it may look like any suburb at first glance, the neighborhood’s entire western edge borders one park after the other, making it a focal point for swimming, jogging and playgrounds. The outdoorsy atmosphere matches its surrounding city. “It’s one of the quintessential Long Beach neighborhoods,” says Realtor Shannon Paul, who works with Zaia Estates and has over five years of experience in the area. With endless recreation, Alamitos Heights allows for an active and wholesome lifestyle close to the coast.

Diverse house styles on peaceful streets
Northeast of downtown Long Beach, Alamitos Heights gives residents a slice of suburban life. The quiet streets are lined with sidewalks and large yards often landscaped with palm trees and rose bushes. The area’s architecture evokes the history of the region from 1930s Mediterranean houses to midcentury ranch-style homes. Mediterranean houses range from $1.8 million to $2 million, while ranch-style homes start from $1.4 million and go up to $1.9 million. No matter the style, interested buyers should prepare themselves for the market: “It’s very high demand and very low inventory. There are multiple offers if the house has been remodeled. Recently, people have paid premiums for a house and then scrape it down to the ground and build a new one. That just shows how in-demand the neighborhood is,” Wallace says.

Many recreation options and swimming spots
Surrounded by parks on its west side, Alamitos Heights offers recreation from jungle gyms to swimming spots. “I think everyone with young children goes to Marina Vista Park. It's got a great playground,” Wallace says. Athletes also compete at the park’s tennis, pickleball and basketball courts. Colorado Lagoon’s wetland trails cross over the water with a bridge, which leads to a beach ideal for lounging and wading. “Right now, they are doing construction on Colorado Lagoon – the Open Channel Project. That will really make it quite amazing,” Wallace says. When the project is finished, a tidal channel will connect the lagoon to Marine Stadium. The stadium is a popular spot for water skiing, rowing and paddle boarding. It also has a small, sandy beach. Meanwhile, pet owners bring their furry friends to Recreation Park’s dog park or walk them around tree-lined paths. At Recreation Park Golf Course, locals can play on a 110-year-old course that's regarded as one of the best in the area.

Marine Stadium events
Not only a park, the stadium hosts community events throughout the year, drawing crowds from all over Long Beach. “Marine Stadium has a weekly farmers market, along with concerts in the summer,” Paul says. The largest event of the year is the annual Sea Festival, where locals can watch dozens of people paddle together during the dragon boat races.

Neighborhood restaurants and the Marina Pacifica Mall
Although Alamitos Heights is mostly residential, it has a couple of neighborhood restaurants for nights out, including Enrique’s for Mexican food. Diners munch on chips and salsa as they pore over a menu with combinations numbered one through 20. Those in the mood for a simple burger and beer can head to 49rs Tavern, which has that classic wood-paneled dimly lit pub feel. The tavern has been serving the neighborhood for decades. When locals need to do some serious shopping, the Marina Pacifica Mall is just a few blocks away and features a variety of department stores as well as supermarkets. These include Ralphs and Gelson’s, which has a hot bar and a wine bar.
