Starr King
Midcentury to newer, small, tidy homes
Residents stroll tree-lined, flat streetscapes with small front yards, some framed with charming white picket fences, stone walls or other decorative enclosures. Garages are prevalent, and there's plenty of parking space in driveways or along the street. Most homes were built from the 1920s through the 1960s, with midcentury being the most common. Homes built in more recent decades blend nicely into the mix. Cin says, "There's a wide range of architecture, mostly comprised of many National and Traditional architectural styles. Lots aren't large and there aren't many cul-de-sacs, but there's great walkability, so you'll see neighbors out walking a lot. It's considered a friendly community where neighbors all know and look out for each other." Residential sizes range from one bedroom to four bedrooms, and most single-family homes can ask for $625,000 to $750,000. "It's a great neighborhood for starter homes," Cin says. "Price points tend to be $200,000 to $300,000 cheaper than they'd be in other nearby neighborhoods."Walkable LBUSD schools
Public schools are within the Long Beach Unified School District, which gets an A grade from Niche. Kids start at Starr King Elementary and head to Hamilton Middle School, both earning a Niche B-minus grade. Older students advance to Jordan High School, which also gets a Niche B-minus and offers a number of specialization pathways, including architecture and engineering (ACE); media and communication (JMAC); and law, emergency and public services, or LEAPS. High school graduates might head to one of the nearby campuses of California State University: Long Beach or Dominguez Hills, which Cin says "are both only about a 20-minute drive from the neighborhood."Coolidge Park, dog park and City Beach
Just south of the neighborhood, community favorite Coolidge Park is a spot to enjoy outdoor activities. It features basketball courts, a baseball diamond and a playground where kids enjoy summer fun in the spray pad. Dogs enjoy playdates at Coolidge Dog Park, which features separate fenced areas for large and small pups and benches for relaxing while pups exercise. Water-seekers can hop on the 91 and head 13 miles west to Hermosa Beach or travel south on Interstate 710 to reach Long Beach City Beach in about 11 miles.Long Beach Boulevard markets and Trader Joe's
For extensive shopping, Cin recommends Bixby Knolls. "It's only about 10 minutes away," says Cin, "and has tons of restaurants and some local shops. Residents will also drive to restaurants up and down Long Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue near Virginia Country Club, where you'll find SteelCraft Coffee, and eateries from sushi to pizza." Franchises and big-box stores are found 2 miles north of the community in Compton. "You'd go to Gateway Towne Center in Compton; it's a new development — part of a whole rejuvenation zone," Cin says. Even closer to home, Long Beach Boulevard is flanked by plenty of small markets and casual eateries for authentic Mexican, soul food and more. Grocery shopping is convenient at Trader Joe's or Vons, roughly 4 miles southeast in Bixby Knolls.Buses along Long Beach Boulevard
Cin says, "You can hop on Long Beach Transit buses at stops along Long Beach Boulevard to reach shopping plazas and other area destinations. And while there's no major employer in the neighborhood, you have all the aerospace engineering employers around Long Beach Airport within 10 miles. Molina Healthcare's corporate offices are also here in Long Beach about 8 miles south."
