A historic neighborhood in Long Beach
Sunrise is a time capsule of Long Beach's development. What was once farmland was transformed into a residential area for its workers beginning in the 1900s. Much of the early 20th-century housing remains, mostly composed of Craftsman bungalows. Some Spanish Revivals were built around the midcentury, and developers have begun purchasing properties for tear-down and rebuild projects, primarily for multifamily housing. In addition to older homes, residents are attracted to the location, bordered by the Pacific Coast Highway and within a 5-mile radius of the airport, beach and Downtown Long Beach.
The Harnett House on the historic Sunrise Blvd was built by architect Kenneth Wing Sr.
Sunrise is comprised of mostly single-level homes with some two-story homes.

Original Craftsman homes in Sunrise Boulevard district
Sunrise also contains a small section that’s one of Long Beach’s several historic neighborhoods, Sunrise Boulevard. “Long Beach has a lot of historic areas, so it really depends on what you’re looking for,” explains Allison Van Wig, Broker and Realtor of Van Wig and Associates, noting that Sunrise features mostly early Craftsman bungalows, with a few midcentury Spanish Revival bungalows as well. Some of the original homes from the 1900s through the 1920s still stand. Houses in Sunrise start at $525,000 and go up to $880,000. They do not come on the market often and generally sell quickly when they do. Van Wig also says that buyers can sometimes find bigger lots around Sunrise than can be found in the average Long Beach neighborhood, which can also affect the price.

Nearby to Wrigley and Downtown Long Beach
Residents who commute or want to be close to lively areas might enjoy Sunrise’s location. “The neighborhood is right next to all the most exciting spots in Long Beach,” says local Realtor Shannon Paul of Zaia Estates. “You’re just east of Wrigley, where there’s a ton of great shopping and restaurants. Downtown is just a few blocks south, and obviously, there’s always something going on there.” While the city bus circulates in Sunrise and there are sidewalks, most residents drive. The Pacific Coast Highway borders the neighborhood, providing an expedited route throughout Long Beach and along the Pacific Coast. Long Beach Airport is 4 miles northeast for those traveling out of state or out of the country.

Downtown Long Beach is less than two miles away and is home to some of the city’s most popular shopping and dining. For restaurant options, locals don’t have to go far. The Pacific Coast highway is lined with chainrestaurants like King Taco and Rally’s, as well as local favorites like La Guananquita and Little Lalune Cuisine. Sunrise is also home to Pho Elephant Thai Kitchen, which serves Thai and Laotian dishes. Poly Burgers is consistently packed after every football and basketball game at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, locally known as Poly.

Parks within walking distance of most homes
Long Beach experiences an average of more than 340 days of sunshine per year. Sunrise capitalizes on the city’s balmy weather with half a dozen parks within the neighborhood. Most residents are within walking distance of one of these green spaces. Martin Luther King Jr. Park offers amenities like a basketball court, soccer field, playground and community center. The park is also home to the King Park Pool, a year-round indoor facility. Hamilton Bowl was renamed Chittick Field in 1983 for Brian Chittick, founder of the Kid Baseball Association. The park is still home to youth sports leagues that practice at the park’s football field, baseball diamond and other athletic courts. The neighborhood’s other parks, like NAACP Freedom Park and Fellowship Park, are small green spaces with walking paths and playgrounds.
