A small neighborhood north of the beach
The Upper Westside of Long Beach is a neighborhood just off the highway and just out of reach of most tourists. “It’s a hidden pocket that a lot of people don’t know about,” says Javier Alvarez, a Long Beach local and realtor with Keller Williams Pacific Estates. Because it’s farther away from the coast and the busy city center, there is a more laid-back atmosphere in the neighborhood. A handful of restaurants and shops operate in Upper Westside, augmenting the convenience that the bordering interstates provide.

Interstates border the neighborhood
Upper Westside is popular with commuters, as Interstates 405 and 710 border the neighborhood. While this access has its obvious appeal, the interstates can cause traffic and excess noise. The neighborhood is not especially walkable, so residents will be better served by driving or taking the city bus, which circulates in the neighborhood.

Minimal Traditional homes in Upper Westside
Upper Westside is a modest midcentury neighborhood where homeowners strive to maintain curb appeal. “It’s a nice place to live,” says real estate associate Mary Ann Edwards of Re/Max College Park Realty. “People keep their yards nice, and the houses are a little older but are well taken care of.” Single-family homes make up the quaint residential blocks of Upper Westside. Most homes are midcentury Minimal Traditional houses, selling from $550,000 to $900,000, which is less than what similar homes in busier Long Beach neighborhoods get.

Local restaurants on West Willow Avenue
Upper Westside is mostly residential, but a handful of restaurants and shops operate around the neighborhood's periphery. Big Saver Foods grocery store is right across West Willow Street. The thoroughfare is also home to a number of chain and local eateries. Restaurants range from KFC and Popeye's to Mexican dishes at Bonanza Tacos Y Mariscos to Hawaiian restaurant Poke Plus. Vegans will find options at the plant-based restaurant PlanTita's Kitchen. For nights out, residents are within walking distance of bars like the Crow’s Nest.

Silverado Park offers pools, programming and sports
Silverado Park sits in the middle of the neighborhood. At just over 10 acres it is where the city hosts multiple clubs, sports leagues and other social programming. Seniors gather for floral arrangement workshops and group exercise classes. Teens can get help with homework, practice tricks at the skatepark or participate in group sports like ping pong, volleyball and indoor soccer. The community center at the park also shows movies and is home to a year-round indoor pool. Outdoors, the park offers game courts for tennis and basketball.

Kids attend camera-ready high school
From kindergarten through eighth grade, Upper Westside kids attend John Muir Academy, which earned a B from Niche. Kids can also attend Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School, which is graded B. The school offers AP and technical courses, including the Academy of Global Logistics, a program operated in partnership with the Port of Long Beach. The high school might also look familiar to some, as it appeared on the television program “Glee” as William McKinley High School.
