Wrigley Heights
Spanish-inspired homes on Eucalyptus Avenue
The area around Eucalyptus Avenue has been dedicated to a historic district by the Long Beach City Council and still has many original Spanish-inspired homes. “Originally, when the homes were built, they were very modest, but they’ve been modified and updated over the years,” Jones says. There are also some Craftsman and ranch-style offerings around the neighborhood. Homes are on the small side — most around 1,000 square feet — and lot sizes are compact. The area is mostly single-family, with homes that range from around $750,000 on the low end to upwards of $1.1 million or more. There is a limited inventory of condos, which are priced between $400,000 and $550,000. Prospective homebuyers should know the real estate market in Wrigley Heights is very competitive. “There are not a lot of sales here, and when something does come up, it goes pretty quickly,” Lanz says.High school turns out pro athletes
Families with children are served by Long Beach United, a high-performing public school district with an A grade from Niche. Students can start their education at Birney Elementary School, a community school in North Wrigley graded B by Niche, but with an A in diversity. Kids may then advance to Hughes Middle, a B-plus school with an A-plus in diversity. Long Beach Polytechnic is an A-plus high school that was founded in 1895. Poly is historically a sports powerhouse that has turned out many professional athletes like MLB All-Stars Chase Utley and Tony Gwynn, and tennis legend Billie Jean King.No highway traffic cutting through
Wrigley Heights is bordered by I-405 to the north and I-710 to the west. The drive to downtown Long Beach is about 4 miles via Pacific Avenue, and the drive to Los Angeles is about 20 miles away via I-110. Long Beach Airport is under 5 miles east and Los Angeles International is about 20 miles northwest. “It’s worth noting that there isn’t much through traffic. Waze is not going to cut you through Wrigley Heights,” Lanz says. “There’s also the MTA light rail station right there at Wardlow, which is really helpful getting around LA.” Bus stops run along Pacific Place and can get a rider to downtown Long Beach in under a half hour.Private parks and beach access
Just north of the neighborhood, Los Cerritos Park sits on 7 acres along Del Mar Avenue. The tennis courts are always buzzing and the zip line on the playground is particularly popular with the kids. At the northern border of Wrigley Heights, Baker Street Park is tucked away on the street of the same name. Secluded and private, the park is known mostly by locals and does not attract a lot of outsiders. The dog park is a generous size with a woodchip base — but visitors wish there were more shade trees. The neighborhood is bordered on the west side by the L.A. River Bike Path, which connects the city of Vernon to downtown Long Beach. Wrigley Heights is only 4 miles from Alamitos Beach and all the parks and green space downtown Long Beach has to offer.Neighborhood has a lunchtime hotspot
Primarily residential and quiet by design, Wrigley Heights is walkable to amenities off Wardlow Road and within a short driving distance to the best of Long Beach. La Chiva Colombiana is the only restaurant in the neighborhood and a lunchtime hot spot. “It’s a little outside the neighborhood, but if you make a left on Atlantic Boulevard, there are restaurants and markets,” Lanz says. There are also some businesses concentrated on Long Beach Boulevard and several medical offices nearby. SoCal-based Rad Coffee celebrates skater culture and has spooky-themed drinks. The inside is chaotic, with black and white tiled floor, pinball machines and outside-the-box coffee merch. Hart N Soul Vegan Cafe is a low-key spot for plant-based comfort food classics like burgers and chili dogs. There is an Albertsons on West Willow Street for groceries and essentials. The best of Long Beach
Long Beach is brimming with annual events easily accessed from Wrigley Heights. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is a huge draw and the largest street race in the country — racers can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour, and Wrigley Heights residents are only TK minutes/miles from the action. The event is known to draw a crowd of approximately 170,000 spectators. There is also the Cambodia Town Parade & Festival and The Congressional Cup, a match racing regatta hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club. And that’s just in April — there is an annual calendar events that round out the year.
