A fast-growing suburb of Merced
Bellevue Ranch embraces big changes — especially the construction of new homes taking over this undeveloped northern part of Merced. In fact, it’s been growing so quickly that the city realized it needs its own fire station; Station 56 will be completed within the next few years. The root of the growth can be traced to the University of California Merced, known as UC Merced, whose students are driving a high demand for housing. Here in Bellevue Ranch, students and other residents enjoy a suburban neighborhood that feels much quieter than most of the city and is known for having family-friendly parks.

New construction and 1980s ranch-style houses in Bellevue Ranch
North of downtown Merced, Bellevue Ranch sprawls out with winding subdivisions free of through traffic and city noise. “The Foothill Drive intersection is pretty safe, with a lot of families. There’s a mix of families and college students living in the houses there,” says Alicia Hernandez, bartender at Native Son and graduate of UC Merced. Although the area’s CAP Index Crime Score is 4 out of 10, the same as the national average, it’s lower than nearby Downtown Merced, which has a 7 out of 10. The residential neighborhood mostly has single-family homes, with yards often landscaped with boxwood shrubs and rose bushes. The backyards are usually large enough for patios. Since Bellevue Ranch has expanded rapidly in recent years, it has many newer homes and continues to grow with brand new construction. The architecture is mostly contemporary, accented by Mediterranean touches like tiled roofs and stucco exteriors. On the southern side of the neighborhood, there are houses built in the 1980s. Contemporary homes range from $450,000 to $700,000, while 1980s ranch-style homes range from $350,000 to $500,000.

Elmer Murchie Park, Merced Dog Park and more recreation
Centrally located in Bellevue Ranch, Elmer Murchie Park is a busy spot. “There’s a bus stop in front of the park, and a lot of families go there,” Hernandez says. Its most popular feature is a fenced-in playground area, but it also has sidewalk paths, basketball hoops and a gazebo with picnic tables. Merced Golf & Country Club, less than a mile northeast of the community, is a private 18-hole course with a sit-down restaurant on the premises. At Merced Dog Park, which borders the community’s southwest corner, there are separate sections for small dogs and bigger dogs, plus a bocce ball court for their owners. About 3 miles east of Bellevue Ranch, Yosemite Lake County Park features an artificial reservoir with a swimming beach, piers and a boardwalk. It also has picnic pavilions and buildings for private events. “They have little spots that you can reserve. My brother got married there, and my best friend and I had our graduation party there,” says Emerson Chavez, bartender at Native Son.
