Top-rated schools, convenience and access to nature define Moondance

The northeast Mesa neighborhood of Moondance consists of late 20th-century subdivisions and Annecy, a high-end gated community. Near highly rated public schools, Target and Safeway, Moondance’s location along Arizona state Route 202 also means it’s convenient to downtown Phoenix and other commuter destinations. While it offers a suburban lifestyle, it’s also surrounded by scenic natural space, where sandy trails weave through the Arizona desert, leading to views of the Four Peaks and the rust-colored Superstition Mountains.

Spanish Revival-style homes and estates in the gated Annecy community

A large portion of properties in Moondance were built in the 1980s and 1990s; many are New Traditional or contemporary ranch-style homes with Spanish Revival touches, ranging between $400,000 and $750,000. Backyards are often xeriscaped — accented with palm trees or cacti — and come with shaded, paved patios and the occasional storage shed or in-ground pool. Moondance also includes a gated community, where homes fetch between $1.2 million and $1.5 million. “Annecy is an idyllic community. It has the French country flair,” says Christine Anthony, a global real estate advisor with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, who lives in North Mesa herself. “It’s very charming and private.” Homes with French countryside- and Mediterranean-inspired architecture were largely built on about half an acre between the 2000s and the 2010s. The community charges monthly homeowners association fees that range between $150 and roughly $200, going toward private amenities that include tennis and pickleball courts, a soccer field, a playground and a covered ramada. The Alta Mira Estates community also features custom and semi-custom homes that sell between $730,000 and $1 million.

A-rated Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies and Red Mountain High School

Children in Moondance may begin their education at Falcon Hill Elementary School, which receives a B grade from Niche. They may then move forward to Fremont Junior High School, scoring a B-plus. Immediately south of the neighborhood, the A-rated Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. While it’s part of the Mesa Public Schools system, the school requires an application for enrollment, and uniforms are mandatory. Red Mountain High School, which also earns an A, maintains a number of career and technical education courses in marketing, sports medicine, computer maintenance, welding and other fields. Its STEM Institute focuses on engineering and biomedical science, partnering with industry-leading employers, like Honeywell.

Athletic amenities and desert hikes at local parks and nearby buttes

Falcon Hill Park sits next to the neighborhood elementary school, offering basketball courts, a volleyball court and a playground. Just over a mile southeast, Red Mountain District Park spans more than 1,000 acres, with a considerable amount of athletic amenities — 16 soccer fields, 8 softball fields, three baseball diamonds and a disc golf course, among others. A playground and several ramadas surround the park’s fishing lake, and the adjacent natural area is home to cactus wren, Gila woodpeckers and greater roadrunners that perch on towering cacti and race past desert wildflowers. Slightly east of the neighborhood, Brown Mountain — also known as Brown Road Butte — offers a roughly mile-long, sandy trail that scales a rocky landscape. “You get great sunsets and a view of Phoenix and the surrounding areas. A lot of people really enjoy getting up in the morning for the sunrise,” Anthony says. “It’s steep, but it’s a very quick climb. Some people will do it a couple of times in a row just to get a really good workout in.”

The Annual Mesa Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning

In addition to various sports games, Red Mountain District Park also hosts the Annual Mesa Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. The event consists of a 5K, a 10K and a One Mile Fun Run, which sell out nearly every year.

Luck Lou’s, Red, White & Brew, international food and big-box stores

Safeway is located in the northwest corner of the neighborhood. It shares a parking lot with Lucky Lou’s American Grill, which serves crispy appetizers, beer on tap and hearty American fare in a Vegas-themed interior. International cuisine can be found at eateries like Thai Patio, Gyros Place and Senor Taco — all of which are part of the same shopping plaza, also home to the Dignity Health Arizona General Hospital Emergency Room. Across the street, Target and The Home Depot are surrounded by chain restaurants, including Taco Bell, Chili’s Bar & Grill, First Watch and Chick-fil-A. “A lot of people like to go to Red, White & Brew for a more elegant setting,” Anthony says. Brick oven-fired pizza, steak and a variety of seafood pasta dishes are served in a stone-accented dining room with an open kitchen, about a mile to the north.

Arizona state Route 202 connects to Phoenix and Mesa Gateway Airport

Arizona state Route 202 runs along the northeastern side of the neighborhood, continuing west to the city center of Phoenix, about 30 miles away. The state route also travels south for about 15 miles to the Mesa Gateway Airport, which offers flights across the Midwest and the western United States. Otherwise, residents can catch the Valley Metro bus 184 on Power Road as it makes its way to the airport.
