Tranquility lives in this Minneapolis nature-lover's paradise
From the century-old streetcar line to the lakeside gardens, the uncomplicated nature of the East Harriet neighborhood of Minneapolis is its charm. Words like “sanctuary” and “peace” are closely associated with East Harriet, whether in reference to the historic Lakewood Cemetery or with a nod to the neighborhood’s many parks and open spaces. “Situated between two Minneapolis lakes and connected to trails and parks that run through the Chain of Lakes, East Harriet is home to some of the most iconic homes in Minneapolis,” says Anthony Dew, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Integrity Lakes. Bordered by West 36th Street on the north and 46th Street to the south, there aren't major highways running directly through the neighborhood. Interstate 35W skims the eastern border, offering easy access to points north and south. Interstate 94 is a bit further east, allowing connection to western suburbs or east towards Saint Paul.
Locally owned businesses are commonly found at the busier intersections throughout East Harriet.

Greenery and outdoor recreation keep this cozy neighborhood busy
Nearby Lake Harriet is part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, its tranquil shores bordered by both the Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary and the Lyndale Park Gardens. The lake is often crowded with boaters listening to the live music that echoes over the waters from the castle-inspired Lake Harriet Bandshell. Come winter, beachgoing becomes ice fishing at this lake and at lake Bde Maka Ska, slightly to the north. Anglers can cast their lines for crappies, bluegill, largemouth bass and other fish all year long. The western side of Lakewood Cemetery meets Bde Maka Ska, where the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line stops at a platform. On the southern side of the cemetery sits the bird sanctuary, a 31-acre nature preserve perfect for birdwatching and hiking. Next door, Lyndale Park Gardens offers a more landscaped outdoor experience with several themed spaces, including a large rose garden.

When it comes to food, ‘downhome’ is where diners feel
A handful of eateries dot the residential side of East Harriet, including Our Kitchen, a small diner established in 1941. This longtime local favorite lets visitors watch the chef prepare hearty breakfast and lunch portions in the open kitchen. Khâluna serves authentic Laotian food in a resort-style atmosphere designed to emulate Southeast Asia. But some say Gigi’s Café is the “bread and butter” of the neighborhood. Known just as much for its community-unifying events and programs as it is for its stuffed grilled cheese and spinach walnut burger, Gigi’s is the place to go to keep up with community happenings. East Harriet residents keep their houses stocked with fresh produce from Lunds & Byerly's.

Atop Lake Harriet, Art Shanty Projects is a winter village festival comprised of creatively designed shanties, which are temporary structures often used for ice fishing. Tens of thousands of attendees enjoy live performance art and shanty walk-throughs. The Winter Kite Festival also brings residents out by the thousands to celebrate the season.
