Lakeside living and downtown convenience define life in Standing Bear

Standing Bear is a laid-back community centered around a namesake lake, where people enjoy boating, fishing and ice skating. Locals often walk to the lake, which is also surrounded by trails. “Someone’s always out jogging or walking their dog when I’m in the neighborhood, so it’s a great place for anyone who loves being outdoors,” says Anne Conway, an associate broker with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate who has sold several houses in the area. About 13 miles west of downtown Omaha, Standing Bear is also conveniently located for commuters. “It’s a quiet, natural escape a little outside the city, but it’s still close enough that people can get to work in a timely manner,” Conway says.

Fishing, boating and ice skating are popular at Standing Bear Lake

Standing Bear Lake was built in 1977 as a dam for the nearby Papillion Creek. It opened for recreation in the same year and has been popular ever since. “So many people grew up going to the lake to fish with their dads, and that’s something you still see today,” Conway says. Visitors can cruise in no-wake boats along the calm water and catch bass and bluegill off fishing docks. There’s a playground with tipis, climbing walls and statues of a bear and a horse. Hiking and biking trails stretch around the water and through hardwood forests. The shallow lake is sometimes used for ice skating during the winter. “Kids will walk from like a mile away, fully dressed in hockey gear, if it freezes,” Conway says. Moylan Iceplex, about 4 miles south, is an indoor rink offering hockey leagues and figure skating classes. It’s located within Tranquility Park, which has soccer fields, baseball diamonds and tennis courts. Several golf courses are less than 5 miles away, including the public Knolls Golf Course.

Getting to downtown Omaha may take 30 minutes with traffic

Though Standing Bear has plenty of sidewalks and trails, it is car-dependent. Fort Street, which spans the community’s southern end, connects with other roads to reach downtown Omaha, where major employers include Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The street may experience more traffic as commuters head to and from work. “At most, it takes like 30 minutes to get downtown during rush hour, which isn’t terrible, but that’s what we consider traffic in Omaha,” Conway says. Eppley Airfield is also near downtown, and Interstate 680, the city’s northern bypass, is about 4 miles east.
