Wakonda combines a suburban setting with city convenience
Located 5 miles northwest of downtown Omaha, Wakonda is a small suburb offering a slower pace away from city bustle. “It’s a great, active neighborhood, where residents are out walking around the neighborhood with their dogs and such,” says Paw Bway Htoo, a Realtor with Nebraska Realty. She is a longtime Omaha resident with two years of experience selling in the region. “There is a lot of community there. You are more likely to know your neighbors in that area than in other parts of the city, like downtown." Convenience also defines Wakonda, with abundant recreation, shopping centers and major roadways all within 5 miles of home.
Ranch and split-level-style homes dominate the market
Wakonda's wide residential roads rise and fall with the area’s hilly terrain. Narrow sidewalks run throughout the community alongside streetlights and mature trees. Homes built during the 20th and early 21st century come in ranch, raised ranch and split-level styles. Most have two-car driveways and are landscaped with bushes and flowering shrubbery. The community is split evenly between renters and owners. Buyers can expect a price range of about $85,000 for homes in need of repair to $265,000 for homes with updates.
Northwest High School students can get a head start on college credits
Students may begin at Wakonda Elementary School, which earns a C rating from Niche. Nathan Hale Magnet School has a C-minus, and Northwest High School has a C-plus. The high school offers more than a dozen advanced placement courses as well as several dual enrollment classes in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Metropolitan Community College. Roncalli Catholic High School is the nearest private option and scores a B-plus.
Residents dine and run most errands along Ames Avenue
Ames Avenue, a couple of miles south of the neighborhood, is one of the main shopping and dining corridors on Omaha's northern side. Along this stretch, shoppers can pick up groceries at Baker’s and other essentials at Walmart Supercenter and Dollar General. Southern Spoon is a buffet-style diner known for its homestyle cooking with dishes like cornbread and oxtail. Asian Burmese Restaurant is another laid-back spot that serves authentic Southeast Asian dishes. Nearby Sorensen Park Plaza covers retail, with Marshalls, Target and other big-box stores. Westroads Mall, which Htoo mentions as a popular shopping destination, is 8 miles southwest and has over 100 retailers.
Parks, golf and a public pool provide options for fun outdoors
Fontenelle Park is a hub for recreation, with walking trails, athletic courts and open green space for picnicking by its large namesake lagoon. Crown Point Park has a basketball court and playground. Omaha Country Club features a members-only 18-hole course, and High Point Pool offers daily and season passes for summer visits. Adams Park Community Center on John A Creighton Boulevard runs year-round programming, like adult pickleball and senior bingo.
Major roads and bus routes connect Wakonda to the city
Northwest Parkway passes a couple of miles east of the neighborhood. The throughway links residents to downtown Omaha, 5 miles southeast. Interstate 680 is 3 miles north, connecting commuters to the greater Omaha metro area. Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority of Omaha services bus stops on main roads framing the community. “The traffic isn’t bad compared to other big cities like Washington D.C.,” Htoo says. Eppley Airfield is about 5 miles east, and CHI Health Immanuel is closer to home, on Sorensen Parkway.
