Historic homes and a popular park south of the Downtown Expressway
Richmond’s Byrd Park neighborhood is known for its charming enclave of historic homes interlacing the trails, ponds and mature trees of one of the city’s most popular public outdoor spaces. Named after the founder of Richmond, William Byrd, and anchored by its namesake park, Byrd Park is desirable for its abundant green space, beautiful homes and walkability to trendy shopping and dining just across Interstate 195. “I wanted to live in a more residential neighborhood but still be close to the city, which you find in Byrd Park,” says June Farrell, a former neighborhood resident. “Rent was more affordable than The Museum District or the Fan, and the proximity to Byrd Park and Maymont was an added bonus.”

Hundreds of acres of public parks in and around the neighborhood
Byrd Park is a 287-acre public space in the neighborhood, with walking trails around its three lakes, a VITA course with outdoor exercise equipment along the trail and the 240-foot-tall Virginia War Memorial Carillon. Visitors can also try out the pedal boats on Fountain Lake or let their dogs roam off-leash at Barker Field. Maymont, a Victorian estate on 100 acres of manicured gardens and a farm, borders Byrd Park to the south. Here, visitors can explore the opulent mansion on the banks of the James River and the exotic plant species and water features of the Italian and Japanese gardens.
One of the appeals of living in Byrd Park is the abundance of nature, parks, and gardens.

Maymont Park’s Garden Glow and Dogwood Dell’s Festival of the Arts
Part of Byrd Park, the 2,400-seat Dogwood Dell Amphitheater hosts the city’s annual Festival of the Arts from May to September, featuring a packed lineup of festivals, musical acts and theater performances. In 2024, the lineup included silent movie nights, a multicultural festival, a Prince cover band and its annual July 4th fireworks show, among other events. Each year between October and November, Maymont Park welcomes thousands of visitors to Garden Glow, when the gardens are illuminated by light sculptures and colorful projections onto the trees and foliage.
Showcasing early 20th century architecture
Housing ranges from circa-1920s brick rowhomes on tight, gridded streets to Mediterranean-style mansions from the same era, as well as some highly modern infill buildings. “There are a lot of cool old condo buildings facing Fountain Lake,” says Angie Cooper, local Realtor at River Fox Realty. "You’ve also got upper-scale, really beautiful historic homes." Among these are the 12 houses and duplexes in Byrd Park Court, a historic subdivision overlooking a common grassy area with a fountain. These 100-year-old properties draw from Tudor and Craftsman styles, with colorful plaster exteriors and terra cotta roofs with chimneys. Properties don’t often come up for sale in Byrd Park, but condos are usually valued between $250,000 and $400,000, while single-family homes have a median price of $650,000. The price of a single-family home in the neighborhood varies dramatically based on lot size and square footage.

Quick walk across a footbridge to the Fan and Carytown
The Fan neighborhood and the Carytown shopping district have dozens of local shops and restaurants just north of the Downtown Expressway. “There is a footbridge that crosses I-195, which makes walking to the city very easy,” Farrell says. Their favorites in the Fan include Benny’s, a pizza spot serving up extra-large slices on paper plates, and Sticky Rice, a casual sushi joint with a full bar. Idlewood Market has grab-and-go snacks and drinks for quick trips right in Byrd Park. "I didn’t have to walk to the Fan anytime I needed to grab something,” Farrell says. For larger grocery runs, the Publix and Kroger in Carytown are about a mile northwest of Byrd Park.
