Historic buildings surrounded forested suburbs
Carillon's suburbs are bounded by Park Drive and the Powhite Parkway. Streets and sidewalks shaded by oak and poplar trees provide scenic routes residents can take to their neighbors and nearby parks. Most homes in Carillon were built in the early to mid-20th century, and there are a number of historic residences to be found. Marburg is the oldest surviving structure in the community. It was built in 1889 and features characteristics of Queen Anne and Folk Victorian designs. Carillon's forested streets are lined with a range of remodeled Italianate houses, Cape Cods, Dutch Colonials, ranch-style houses and homes that incorporate a mix of Classical and Gothic Revival characteristics. Prices in Carillon vary depending on size and location. A modest ranch-style home in the neighborhood's northern section can cost around $350,000. Memorial bell-tower in the center of Richmond's largest green space
The Carillon tower looms 240 feet above the neighborhood, surrounded by open grass fields and lush forests. The Georgian-Revival style tower was built in 1932 to commemorate the Virginians lost to World War I. The tower is also a giant musical instrument, containing 53 fixed bronze bells of different sizes played by a "carillonneur" on occasions like Veterans Day, Memorial Day and July 4th. "There's over 200 acres of green space in Carillon," says local Realtor Susan Fisher, "You can walk your dog, go to Maymont, or go to the festivals and Carillon concerts." All around the tower is the southern section of Byrd Park, where patrons can walk and exercise in meadows and forest trails or float along in paddle boats around Swan Lake. Sloping east towards the river is Dogwood Dell, famous for its 2,400-seat amphitheater with views of the tower and eclectic lineup of live performances. Just south of the amphitheater is Dell Meadow, a natural learning area where ReForest Richmond, the Virginia Native Plant Society and other volunteer groups are planting native plants and removing invasive species. Mountain bikers can hop on the Dogwood Dell Loop from the kiosk at Pump House Park. The park features an all-granite Gothic Victorian structure built in the late 19th century to supply Richmond with fresh water. Forested trails lead visitors to views of the all-granite canals and an 18th-century archway constructed to celebrate a visit from George Washington.
