Celebrating history on Saint Paul's West Side
In a dimly lit cave beneath Saint Paul's West Side, dance partners swing each other around to the tune of live big band music each Thursday night — a weekly tradition and ode to the location's past as an underground Prohibition-era casino. Tradition unites the West Side, whether celebrating a collective cultural heritage with the biggest Cinco de Mayo parade in town or passing down a family cafe through generations. The neighborhood’s housing preserves its history, dating back to the 1800s and listing at much lower prices than the average for the Twin Cities. Just across the Mississippi from downtown, the West Side's location provides not only affordability but also convenience and natural beauty. "This is a great starting place for many first-time buyers," says local Realtor Libby Mejia.

The best Mexican food in the Twin Cities
Across Saint Paul, the West Side is known for its Mexican restaurants. Widely regarded as the best Mexican dining experience in the city, El Burrito Mercado is more than just a dinner destination – it's a bakery, deli and marketplace that sells everything from artisan goods to produce and meats. "This is the secret to my mother-in-law's amazing tamales," Mejia says. At Boca Chica Mexican Restaurant, what started as a 28-patron space now spans dining rooms painted with murals celebrating Mexican history; this Mexican restaurant is often considered one of the best in the Twin Cities. Every Saturday from June to October, the West Side Farmers Market sells fresh produce and art from local vendors while bands play and neighbors get to know each other.

Sunset river cruises and swing dancing in a cave
The Mississippi River carves out the West Side, giving residents plenty of opportunities to explore the riverfront. Just across the river from downtown Saint Paul, Harriet Island Regional Park is a popular spot for a walk or bike ride along the water or to hop on a boat ride from Padelford Riverboats. This company offers sightseeing tours and dinner cruises alike, allowing passengers to get to know the city or enjoy a special occasion. To enjoy the skyline without getting on a boat, the West Side's High Bridge has the best views overlooking the city and breathtaking sunsets each night. Cherokee Regional Park has additional playgrounds, picnic spots and scenic overlooks. Those interested in history should check out the Wabasha Street Caves to take tours of a spot originally used for mining that later operated as a Prohibition-era casino. On Thursday evenings, the cave brings in live bands for its weekly swing dancing night — a way for the community to honor and celebrate its history. Los Campeones Gym serves as another community gathering place, with plenty of powerlifting equipment for those especially serious about getting fit.

A fast-moving market with affordable historic housing
A diversity of historic single-family housing lines the West Side's streets — "some from as early as the late 1800s," Mejia says. Steeply pitched roofs, screened-in porches and other interesting architectural details add individual charm to each home. On small lots shaded by tall trees, the West Side’s yards have just enough space for a small garden and some outdoor furniture, and a few condo complexes in the neighborhood suit those who'd prefer to skip the maintenance. Prices run significantly lower than the average for the Minneapolis metro area. "The demand here is high due to affordability," Mejia says. "Homes sell quickly." Prices typically fall between $200,000 and $400,000, but larger remodels sometimes exceed that.

Saint Paul's annual Cinco de Mayo celebration
Each year, people from all over the Twin Cities come to the West Side for its Cinco de Mayo celebration. This annual tradition since 1985 kicks off with a parade followed by a car and bike show, then American Bullies, French Bulldogs and exotic dogs strut their stuff for the annual dog show. There's also a softball tournament and authentic "placita" market, where visitors can shop from local vendors, listen to live music and try different Mexican foods.
