Brookwood Terrace
Single-family homes in different styles
“The homes are older and modest,” Reynolds says. Single-family homes here range between $800,000 and $1.5 million. Early 2000s townhouses without front yards and midcentury bungalows on concrete lots start around $800,000, while midcentury ranch-style or late 20th-century new traditional homes start closer to $1 million; features like traditional grass lawns, more than three bedrooms and attached garages can raise the price up to $1.5 million. Homes typically don’t belong to homeowner’s associations and residential streets are dotted with trees and lined with traditional grass lawns, drought-tolerant landscaping or concrete lots. Mobile and manufactured homes are also available and range between $100,000 and $300,000.Shopping and dining with global flavors
For groceries, residents head less than a mile south to the Walmart Supercenter next to Grand Century Shopping Mall. The mall is part of San Jose’s Little Saigon and features a variety of specialty stores and Vietnamese eateries, like Rong Bien, a family-style restaurant, and Nuoc Mía Ninh Kieu, a fresh juice bar. For Latin American flavors, Chaparral Supermarket offers international snacks like Peruvian candies and imported ingredients like papa criolla, a popular potato variety in Colombia. Less than a mile southeast, Acopio is a popular upscale Mexican restaurant that reinterprets traditional dishes, like molé poblano con pato (chili adobo duck confit). Nearby, Reynolds recommends Naglee Park Garage, a bistro and bar known for its European and New American flavors. “It’s a very esoteric, casual eatery, which we don’t have a ton of in San Jose,” Reynolds says. “It’s great for casual fare—burgers and things like that, and people like their beer.”Exploring San Jose’s history
Kelley Park is about a mile south of Brookwood Terrace and includes History Park, a walkable cultural campus of historic and replica buildings; here, residents can explore San Jose’s past by visiting museums, riding the trolley and sampling traditional treats like ice cream and candy in an old-timey setting. “History Park is amazing; it’s like stepping into an old San Jose neighborhood,” Reynolds says. “It’s all set up with city streets so kids can ride their bikes, but there’s no cars. That’s the #1 place in Santa Clara County if you like historic buildings.” The park grounds are operated by History San Jose, a non-profit organization that preserves San Jose’s cultural legacy. “History Park has a lot of community events, and the majority of them are free,” Reynolds says. “A big one is the Christmas Drive-Thru Light Show. They have lit-up displays, illumination—it’s fun and kids like it.” Though residents don’t have to wait until December to celebrate the holidays, History Park also hosts Christmas in July, an evening of family fun with music, food and games to raise money for History San Jose.San Jose Unified District schools with opportunities for higher learning
Brookwood Terrace is part of the San Jose Unified School District, rated B-plus overall by Niche. Local kids can start at Selma Olinder Elementary, rated C, which offers an after-school program to strengthen academic and social skills. Young students move on to Muwekma Ohlone Middle, not yet rated, where students can enroll in the International Baccalaureate program for a deeper understanding of world languages and culture. At B-rated San Jose High, students can continue the International Baccalaureate program and take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at San Jose Community College.Numerous green spaces along Coyote Creek
At the 13-acre Selma Olinder Park, residents can wind down with a walk along tree-shaded trails or burn some calories practicing their serve on the tennis courts; pet owners can take their furry friends to Selma Olinder Dog Park, which is split into separate areas for small and large dogs. Nearby, the 15-acre William Street Park gives residents more room to enjoy shaded picnic areas, play on multiuse fields and host weekend get-togethers. “They’re all nice parks,” Reynolds says. “William Street is in a more suburban setting, so it’s not in the thick of downtown.” Coyote Creek flows between the two parks, and the 19-mile Coyote Creek Trail leads southeast toward the San Jose city limits. Reynolds recommends Kelley Park, less than a mile south, which features History Park, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and the Japanese Friendship Garden on its grounds. “Those places are all connected, and they are wonderful,” Reynolds says. “Kelley Park is a gorgeous setting for a picnic, and Happy Hollow Park is fantastic for elementary-age or younger students. There are rides there, and it’s small but big enough to explore for a half-day trip.”Getting around San Jose

Tech hubs like Sunnyvale, Cupertino and North San Jose are within 15 miles, and Downtown San Jose is about 2 miles west. Brookwood Terrace is typically sidewalk-lined and walkable, but Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s buses and light rail system are another way for residents to get around. Regional Medical Center is about 2 miles northeast, and San Jose Mineta International Airport is 6 miles northwest.
