Castlemont
Two stories and townhouses
The residential streets of Castlemont are level and pedestrian-friendly, typically lined with wide, well-maintained sidewalks. Several distinct subdivisions sit throughout the neighborhood, including Eden and Lynhaven, both characterized by rows of contemporary Spanish-style single-family homes. Merrivale West is a master-planned condo and townhouse community with resident-only amenities like outdoor pools and a clubhouse. Most properties in the Castlemont area were built between the 1950s and 1980s and have midcentury architectural features like brick foundations and earth-toned facades. Single-family homes here tend to sell between $1.2 million and $3.5 million, while townhouses or condo units usually range from $600,000 to $1.5 million. “The further west and closer to Cupertino you go, the higher the housing prices get,” Leonard says.Restaurants and shops line Winchester Boulevard
Most grocery and daily shopping happens at the Safeway supermarket in West Park Plaza along Winchester Boulevard. The roadway travels north-south through Castlemont and connects to downtown Campbell, where the Downtown Weekly Farmers’ Market is hosted on Sundays. For a bite to eat, Mo’s is a go-to for breakfast and burgers, and right next door, Opa! serves authentic Greek dishes, including souvlaki and lemon chicken orzo. A couple of blocks south of the neighborhood is South Winchester BBQ, a popular barbecue restaurant where diners enjoy sauce-covered racks of ribs on an outdoor patio.Directly north of the neighborhood across Interstate 280 is Santana Row shopping plaza and the Westfield Mall, two of Silicon Valley’s most popular commercial centers. “People will stay in hotels in the area just to go shopping at Santana Row and the Westfield Valley Fair Mall for the holidays,” says Michelle Elliott, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “According to Westfield company – which operates malls across the globe – the Westfield Valley Fair mall is considered their crown jewel.”
The Harker School is a nationally recognized private STEM institution
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade can attend one of three local elementary schools based on their neighborhood address: the B-rated Lynhaven Elementary, the B-plus-rated Castlemont Elementary or the C-rated Rosemary Elementary School. Kids in grades six through eight can move on to Monroe Middle School, which receives an overall C-plus rating. Ninth through 12th-grade students have two secondary school options: the A-minus-rated Del Mar High School or Prospect High, an A-rated institution that recently underwent a multimillion-dollar campus renovation and update. Prospect’s new features include a new wing for math and social sciences and a state-of-the-art robotics classroom. “People are also buying in this area for access to West San Jose’s private schools,” Leonard says. The Harker School in particular stands out, she says; the A-plus-rated kindergarten through 12th-grade institution was named the sixth-best STEM school in the country on Niche’s 2025 rankings.Community Little League groups
Marijane Hamann Park may be the only city park in the neighborhood, but it has plenty of room for outdoor recreation with amenities like tennis courts, baseball diamonds and multiple playgrounds. The park is also home to the local community center, decorated with a brightly colored mural. Leonard says that many local families have their kids enrolled in the community Little League organization, which uses the ball fields at Rosemary Elementary School for practice and games.Events in Downtown Campbell
Castlemont is near downtown Campbell, where there’s plenty to do. The Wine Walk in downtown Campbell is a local favorite where residents can taste the latest harvests from all over California wine country in the spring and fall. The Historic Downtown Campbell Car Show displays the best of the best of vintage, classic cars owned by residents, and the Boogie Music Festival offers two days of live entertainment, free of charge.Getting around the Valley
While Winchester Boulevard is the main thoroughfare directly through the community, Castlemont is also bordered by the San Tomas Expressway to the west and Highway 17 to the east. Both connect to Interstate 280, Castlemont’s northern border, giving residents access to the greater San Jose metropolitan area and Silicon Valley. The Valley Transit Authority provides bus routes and light rail services for those who prefer public transit. The San Jose Mineta International Airport offers dozens of direct domestic flights and is situated approximately 7.5 miles north of the neighborhood. O’Connor Hospital and its 24-hour emergency services department is 3 miles away.Access to major tech employers
Many people who are interested in Castlemont work for large, well-known tech companies with headquarters across Silicon Valley. “It’s a great area for commuters and you’ll see a common link between high-tech individuals that live there,” Leonard says. “You’ve got Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Nvidia, Apple Park – all right nearby.” Although Google’s main headquarters are currently located in Mountain View – approximately 12 miles away –plans to construct a new Google complex right outside downtown San Jose are underway. Developers hope the new complex will provide tech-oriented opportunities for people living nearby.
