East Foothills
Suburban Neighborhood in San Jose, California
Santa Clara County 95127, 95132
Variety in housing over the years
East Foothills’s housing reflects the area's rich history and transformation into a desirable neighborhood in the Bay Area. “One hundred years ago, the neighborhood was up and coming, and a number of classic Spanish, Tudor, and Victorian-style homes were built,” Moore says. “As the popularity grew, there was an infill of smaller, mid-century houses leading to a real variety of architecture.” This variety can be found on windy, hilly streets with expansive views of the wide-open sky. Houses sit on large lots under the shade of California foliage, leading to a sense of privacy and seclusion from neighbors nearby. However, this seclusion is only physical in nature, as residents are very close-knit. “A lot of people just sort of know everybody; there’s a real feeling of community,” says Moore. The market is very competitive, and listings sell quickly. Prices for contemporary builds begin at $1 million, while larger, renovated homes with scenic views can top $4 million. The San Jose Country Club
“The neighborhood is centered around the San Jose Country Club, the third oldest private golf club,” Moore says. The Club was established in 1849, and members have access to more than just golf – but the 18-hole course with sweeping views of the Bay Area and rolling hills remains the main attraction. Members can also head to the pool or play a round of bocce ball. Alum Rock Park offers more natural recreation with miles of hiking trails across 720 acres of the rugged Diablo Mountain Range.Learn the arts at Linda Vista Elementary School
Students typically attend Linda Vista Elementary School and begin their journey through the arts, as it is a member of the VAPA (visual and performing arts) cluster. Music, dance, art, and theatre are all integrated into educational coursework, and the school received a C-plus rating on Niche. Older students have the option to attend Joseph George Middle School, which received a C rating on Niche, and James Lick High School, which received a B rating. James Lick High School offers various cultural, creative and academic clubs, including the Art in Community Club. Parents looking for a private school option may consider Milpitas Christian School, which received an A-minus rating on Niche.Alum Rock Village Farmers Market
Every Sunday is special in East Foothills as the Alum Rock Village Farmers Market operates year-round from 8:00 – 12:00. Visitors can find fresh California Produce and bright wildflowers amongst the array of vendors. The market is a member of the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association.Easy access to San Jose
Parts of East Foothills are walkable, but the neighborhood's secluded nature means residents will need to use public transportation or a vehicle to access the vibrant urban areas of downtown San Jose, which is under 7 miles away. The Alum Rock train station is just south of the neighborhood and connects to the VTA Light rail system. Those looking to travel further can head to San Jose Mineta International Airport, under 10 miles away.Grab a bite to eat at The Grandview
The Grandview is aptly named. For over 100 years, the restaurant has sat perched in the Diablo Mountains overlooking the neighborhood below. The Grandview offers a truly immersive dining experience with multiple courses of farm-to-table dishes and expansive views of Silicon Valley. Other local eateries can be found closer to town. “Antipasto’s by De Rose on Mckee Road is known throughout San Jose as a fantastic Italian Deli,” Moore says. Retail shopping is available across the street at the Country Club Villa Shopping Mall, where residents can get weekly groceries at Lucky. The area is also noted for its abundance of houses of worship across different faiths, including Catholicism, Protestantism and Buddhism.
