Centrally located South San Jose suburb
Suburban Oak Grove’s central location and below-average prices make it a popular place for first-time homebuyers. “Even though we’re far from Apple and Google, we have everything we need within a 10-minute drive,” says Liborio Millares, a real estate agent with Compass who lives in Oak Grove and has been selling homes here since 2017. “A lot of people working in tech are coming here from Sunnyvale.” U.S. Highway 101 and state Routes 85 and 87 are within 2 miles, and Martial Cottle Park and the Westfield Oakridge shopping mall are close by. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 3 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Nearby houses of worship include Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church and Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Condos with grassy courtyards
Most homes here are two-level 1970s condos encircling grassy courtyards. Minimal traditional single-family homes are also available and sit close together along sidewalk-lined streets in the neighborhood’s north; Craftsman-inspired New Traditional homes can be found near Coy Park. Townhouses are also available throughout.
In May 2024, the median overall home price was $570,000, 82% lower than San Jose’s average of $1.6 million. Single-family homes can cost more, with a median price of $1.3 million. A one-bedroom condo can start at $440,700, plus homeowners association fees, while a three-bedroom with a garage can cost $770,000, plus fees. A three-bedroom single-family home can cost between $1.1 million and $1.5 million.
Join the Environmental Action Club at Oak Grove High
Local kids can start at Hayes Elementary and then attend Davis Intermediate; both earn a B-minus from Niche. The B-plus-rated Oak Grove High has 30 student clubs, including the Advanced Science Research Club and Environmental Action Club. Students can also attend Summit Tahoma, an A-rated charter high school. Nearby private options include the A-rated Apostles Lutheran School for kindergarten through Grade 12.
Within 2 miles of Highways 85, 87 and 101
Blossom Hill Road borders Oak Grove to the south, which connects to state Routes 85 and 87, as well as U.S. Highway 101, within 2 miles. “If there’s an accident on one highway,” Millares says, “there’s another way around.” The regional Caltrain’s Blossom Hill station is 2 miles east, providing service into downtown San Jose, 9 miles north, and San Francisco, 56 miles away. The Valley Transportation Authority’s (VTA) Snell light rail station is a mile southeast, and the VTA bus makes several stops along Blossom Hill Road. With dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks, Oak Grove is bike- and pedestrian-friendly. Kaiser Permanente’s San Jose Medical Center is 2 miles southeast, and San José Mineta International Airport is an 11-mile trip.
Volunteer at the community gardens in Martial Cottle Park
“Martial Cottle Park is one of the greatest things that we have in Oak Grove,” Millares says. “You can walk around the park and see lots of young families with strollers walking with the grandparents. They also have a volunteer program with high schools. It’s a very active community park.” The 287-acre Martial Cottle Park is on a former farm and maintains its agricultural legacy by offering community gardens and educational programs about sustainable farming. At the 4-acre Coy Park in Oak Grove’s center, kids can play on the safari-themed playground or run around in the open green space. The Westfield Oakridge mall offers more entertainment options, including the Cinemark Century Oakridge 20 XD and ScreenX movie theater and the Bowlero San Jose bowling alley.
Catch the big game at High Five Pizza
“High Five Pizza is a super popular spot,” Millares says of the family-owned sports bar that’s been slinging pizzas since 1989. “On Wednesdays, they have barbecue day, and you can always find it packed with people coming to watch a sport.” Blossom & Bourbon serves craft cocktails and wood-fired meals like lamb chops in a modern atmosphere. National retailers like Michaels and Goodwill are in Oak Grove’s west, and the Westfield Oakridge shopping mall’s 100 retailers are a short drive away. Grocery options include Smart & Final Extra! and Safeway.
Martial Cottle Park’s Fall Festival
Pumpkins, vendors and antique cars fill Martial Cottle Park each October during the one-day Fall Festival. The park hosts other events throughout the year, including Viva CalleSJ, a biking and skating festival that shuts down San Jose’s streets in April, June and September, and the Spring Garden Fair, a plant sale each April. At Coy Park, residents can enjoy free family-friendly movie nights during the summer.
Reduced air quality from nearby wildfires
Oak Grove has a low risk for wildfires, but residents may experience reduced air quality during fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south. The last major wildfires were in 2020 when almost 90,000 acres burned in Santa Cruz County.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
