Oak Grove is part of South San Jose's suburban landscape

Oak Grove is a laid-back suburban community in the southern part of San Jose, offering below-average home prices and a convenient location. First-time buyers like the neighborhood’s diverse housing options, with condos and townhouses that are well below the city’s median. The area is also surrounded by major highways and everyday conveniences, making it a comfortable place to settle into suburban living.

Housing options range from condos, townhouses to single-family homes

Oak Grove has more condos than single-family homes and townhouses, which is a big reason the area stays a lot more affordable than the rest of San Jose. The neighborhood’s median sale price is around $600,000, much lower than the city’s median of $1.4 million. Condos typically range from the upper $300,000s to the lower $700,000s, and townhouses fall between $600,000 and the lower $900,000s. Single-family homes can sell from $1.1 million to $1.4 million. Several mobile park communities are on the south side of the neighborhood. Roughly half the residents rent their homes, with apartments rounding out the area’s housing options. “This is part of the Blossom Valley area,” says Therese Jarrouche, owner of Success Realty with over 20 years of experience. “It’s in high demand, but it still has lower prices compared to Willow Glen, Cambrian and Almaden. There are lots of restaurants and shopping centers off Blossom Hill, and it’s very close to the freeways.”

The neighborhood has many shopping centers nearby

Oak Grove is near several large shopping and dining hubs, including:

  • The Westfield Oakridge mall, which has nearly 100 stores, restaurants and entertainment options
  • Southgate Shopping Center, with Michaels, Dollar Tree and service stores
  • Bloom Plaza, home to many restaurants and local businesses
  • Cottle Road, lined with big-box stores like Target, Marshalls and Lowe’s

Plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the outdoors

Oak Grove is surrounded by many parks and green spaces. “Martial Cottle Park is one of the greatest things that we have in Oak Grove,” says Liborio Millares, Realtor at Compass with nearly a decade of experience. “You can walk around the park and see lots of young families with strollers walking with the grandparents. They also have a volunteer program with high schools. It’s a very active community park.” The 287-acre park also has community gardens and educational programs about sustainable farming. Coy Park features a safari-themed playground and open green space, while Chynoweth Park is popular for jogging and dog walking. Farther north, Edenvale Gardens Regional Park has facilities for basketball, tennis and volleyball.

Public, private and charter schools that serve the neighborhood

Elementary and middle schools in Oak Grove are part of Oak Grove School District, including Del Roble Elementary School. Oak Grove High School is part of East Side Union High School District and offers many performing arts curriculums. Both school districts have interdistrict and intradistrict transfer options.

Students can also apply to several alternative schools, including the top-rated charter high school, Summit Tahoma, and Apostles Lutheran School, which is a private school that covers transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.

Navigating San Jose and Silicon Valley

Residents have many transit options. Ways to get around include:

  • U.S. Route 101, state Routes 85 and 82 connect to the rest of Silicon Valley
  • The regional Caltrain stops at San Jose Diridon station, with connections to the San Francisco Bay Area
  • The Valley Transportation Authority light rail and bus services
  • Cyclists and pedestrians can use bike lanes and sidewalks
  • San José Mineta International Airport is 10 miles away
