Unincorporated community tucked away in the Santa Ynez foothills
Toro Canyon offers seclusion and privacy in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, about 8 miles south of Santa Barbara. "Toro Canyon is the area I recommend for buyers who want to get away from it all but still want to be close to amenities in about 15 minutes," says Joe Parker, Realtor with The Santa Barbara Group at Berkshire Hathaway. Toro Canyon’s sprawling estates and ranch-style homes are close to the Toro Canyon Park, which features scenic hiking trails, the private Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, and uncrowded public beaches south of the highway; this peaceful neighborhood receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to a national average of 4. The landscape has also attracted lots of wholesale plant nurseries that occupy the neighborhood's southeast corner and a few larger farms peppered throughout. For shopping and dining, residents travel to neighboring towns like Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria.

Secluded multi-acre properties and close set ranch-style homes
The community's rolling hills and scenic canyons invite homebuyers seeking solitude. Toward the north at high elevations, Spanish Revival-style estates from the 1980s and 2000s feature four bedrooms, sprawling multi-acre lots, and views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands and Santa Ynez Mountains; prices generally range from $6 million to $10 million. Housing becomes smaller and more densely packed toward the south, with traditional ranch-style homes from the 1960s and some Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s surrounded by tall shrubbery and palm trees; prices for both styles typically range from $2.5 million to $3.5 million. The Polo Condo Complex, set next to the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, offers two-bedroom condo units for between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

Oceanside restaurants on Santa Clause Lane and in neighboring towns
Toro Canyon is primarily a residential area, with the exception of several wholesale plant nurseries, but there's also a small retail area just south of the 101, on Santa Claus Lane. "The community values its peace, so the local government has passed laws to prevent too much commercial development," says Parker. Padaro Beach Grill, a small casual Oceanside eatery on Santa Claus Lane, serves burgers and fish tacos and has plenty of outdoor picnic tables. The dog-friendly Summerland Beach Café, about 2 miles away, has been locally owned and operated since 1981, and offers standard American fare and all-day breakfast. Nearby grocery stores are in Carpinteria, including Kim’s’ Market, 3 miles away, and Smart and Final Extra, 5 miles away. About 4 miles away, Montecito is home to higher-end shops and clothing boutiques on Coast Village Road, including the modern chic stylings of Maison K.

Hiking trails with panoramic views at Toro Canyon Park
Set in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the 74-acre Toro Canyon Park is one of the community's biggest attractions. "The park has amazing views and plenty of spots to hike or picnic," says Parker. Biking, hiking and equestrian trails wind through the hillside across the arid landscape with views of the Pacific Ocean. The park also has picnic tables shaded by mature oak trees and an off-leash dog area. Padaro Beach (also known as Santa Claus Beach) and Loon Point Beach are both located south of the highway and aren’t as crowded as other beaches closer to Montecito and Santa Barbara. The private Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club is another huge draw for tennis and polo players; in addition to practice facilities and tournaments, members enjoy access to the club’s yoga studios, fitness centers and junior Olympic-size pool.
