Vibrant, active cultural haven

Vibrant Leimert Park is a treasured portion of South Los Angeles, where nostalgia, renewal and vision create a sense of belonging. Continual investment and collaboration — from its original developers to a current network of supportive small businesses — cultivates a palpable camaraderie. Nia Mallett, Realtor with Compass, who’s been selling in the area for over 10 years, and lives in Leimert Park, says, “People who move here from other parts of LA say they’ve never felt so part of a genuine community. No matter what your race, age, gender, or sexuality, Leimert Park reminds you of the old-school way of living, where people know each other and are always out walking with dogs or strollers.” Laid out by its namesake, Walter Leimert, in the 1920s, it’s one of LA’s first planned communities, heralded as a solid example of early urban planning. Boulevards named Obama, Martin Luther King and Leimert are fashioned to route traffic away from gathering hubs that sustain the community heartbeat.

Spanish-influence 1920s, Craftsman, Tudor mix

Residential streets are lined with majestic magnolias and a charming composite of 1920s and 1930s single-level and two-story homes. Many reflect the style of well-known LA area developer-builder Elwain Steinkamp, honoring the region’s Spanish-Mexican influence and using L-shape layouts with outdoor living spaces. Red curved-tile roofs and Spanish colonial archways are prevalent, and Cozy Craftsmans and stately Tudor Revivals add variety. Pricing ranges from $730,000 for a remodeled bungalow, to $975,000 for a 1930s three-bedroom, to $1.3 million for a two-story Spanish-style with solar power and a detached guest house.

Leimert Park greenspace for get-togethers

Leimert Park Village Plaza is where holidays, art and music are celebrated with lively outdoor festivities. Designed by the Olmsted Brothers to include dense trees, sidewalks, gardens and a fountain, the greenspace and plaza serve as the public fulcrum for get-togethers.

Largest Juneteenth in LA

The Juneteenth Festival in Leimert Park is the longest-running and largest family barbecue in the county. Says Mallett, “People also come here for the MLK Day parade that runs through Leimert Park. Recognizing and honoring African American culture is part of the fabric.” Every month on the last Sunday, Leimert Park Artwalk sizzles with fashion, food and music. For nearly two decades, Leimert Park has also been the hotspot for the Taste of Soul family festival, packing a stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard with vendors and stages treating thousands to live performances, networking opportunities and local cuisine.

Eclectic, artsy Leimert Park Village

Mallett adds, "Leimert Park Village is home to a number of eclectic businesses that really embody the personality here. There are coffee shops, herb shops, clothing boutiques, and restaurants that make it the quaint, cool place it is.” Sole Folks, launched in 2021, is a collective of black-owned businesses, including family-run Nappily Naturals & Apothecary, offering organic powders, teas, and tonics. The collective is co-owned with ORA, a hip vegetarian restaurant formerly operated as Hot and Cool. Family-owned Ackee Bamboo is a favorite for Jamaican eats, and the World Stage Performance Gallery hosts productions and workshops in jazz, drums, writing and more. Says Mallett, “Creativity is big here, and Mark Bradford’s Art and Practice gallery is really popular.” Art and Practice includes exhibitions curated by the California African American Museum and a public space for panel discussions, lectures, and screenings. Residents look forward to the reopening of the stunning art-deco Vision Theatre Performing Arts Center, a landmark since 1931 undergoing a complete restoration. Grocery shopping is convenient at Albertson’s on Crenshaw Boulevard.
