Walkable neighborhood 10 minutes north of downtown
Located northwest of downtown, Jordan is a Minneapolis neighborhood with a dense city feel. “It’s very urban. It’s in the Near North area, which is still pretty close to the heart of Minneapolis,” says Markesha Smith, a Realtor with Re/Max Realty who recently sold a home in the neighborhood. Jordan is roughly 10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis by car, and it’s also walkable and well-connected by bus. “The biggest draw for people is the price,” Smith adds. Houses in the area typically list between $100,000 and $350,000, lower than many other Minneapolis neighborhoods. However, what most people don’t know about Jordan is that it’s also home to a surprisingly lively arts scene, and the presence of local businesses and nonprofits gives this neighborhood its strong community spirit.

Classic homes in an affordable price range
Homes in Jordan sit packed together on narrow, gridded streets. Lots are small but grassy, outlined by chain-link fences and trees that hang above the sidewalk. Many homes here were built in the early 1900s, with popular styles of the time including bungalows, American Foursquares and Craftsman houses. Screened-in front porches and colorfully accented trim are common features, and most also have a petite backyard with a detached garage in the alley behind. About half of residents in Jordan own their homes, with the median price for housing being roughly $220,000. Those willing to put in the elbow grease might find a fixer-upper for under $100,000, though a well-maintained historic bungalow with four bedrooms can also sell for as high as $350,000.

I loved growing up in Jordan. Jordan has great schools, great small town feel and I always feel safe in the community. Jordan is a town where the community cares. Jordan is very family friendly.

For drinkers, they have dozens of micro breweries, so it is common to have a lot of local beers on tap. Not a drinker myself, but they are out there if you like that sort of thing. The food around here is in mass variety, and generally always delicious. If you have a type of food you like, minus Filipino cuisine, Minneapolis or surrounding areas have what you want.

The crime here is very bad, there's always a shooting or something happening. For example today is Thursday, last Tuesday they found 2 dead bodies in a car. I don't feel safe enough to walk down the street to the park with my kids.

The diversity here is amazing if that is something that is important to you. The city also just built a new express bus line down Penn Ave. However, since I've lived here for 3 years I can tell you there are some major downsides. The crime is quite high. Everyweek I hear gunshots in my area, and often people are posting on Nextdoor about theft, break ins and assaults. As a woman I never go outside after dark. There is also a general lack of care for the neighborhood, I often find trash in my yard and my neighbors yards. At night it is quite noisy, I can hear cars drag racing, loud music, or fireworks 5 months a year. At night people also speed through the stop sign by my house and I've witnessed quite a few Tbone accidents from this. I don't have kids so I can't comment on the schools. like how this area is being developed by the city, but I can't take the crime and noise anymore. I am considering moving somewhere else soon.
