Tangletown is a charming Minneapolis neighborhood with winding streets
The historic Washburn Park Water Tower stands tall in Tangletown, a Minneapolis neighborhood named for its winding streets carved into the hilly terrain. Like the water tower, many of the homes were built in the early 1900s. These older, well-maintained homes, coupled with the neighborhood’s unique layout and the shady trails at Minnehaha Parkway, help create a charming atmosphere that attracts lifelong residents. There are plenty of local businesses in and around Tangletown, and you are only 5 miles from downtown Minneapolis.
Tangletown is only minutes away from downtown Minneapolis and MSP International Airport.

Architecture from the early 1900s includes Tudor and Colonial Revivals
Realtor Michael Gross with Re/Max Results, who has lived in Minneapolis since college, says that Tangletown’s hills “allow for unique and big houses that were constructed in the early 1900s. They are awesome, just cool architecture and unique layouts.” Some of the homes still have the original woodwork on the inside. You can find anything from colorful Craftsman styles and Foursquares to Colonial and Tudor Revivals. Alleys go behind most houses, leading to detached or added-on garages, although there is plenty of room for street parking. While a blanket of snow covers the lawns in the winter, the warmer weather reveals several well-maintained gardens. “It’s one of the prettiest parts of the city,” says Realtor Andrea Vorachek with Reside, who used to live in the neighborhood. “Because of the tangled streets, lots tend to be a little bit longer and wider in some areas, and that gives people the ability to do a lot more with their gardens.”
Classic Tudor Revivals are a staple in Tangletown.
Well-maintained homes can be found around Minnehaha Parkway.

Prices trend higher than nearby Kingfield, with a competitive market
While prices generally range from the mid-$400,000s to just over $1 million, some houses have sold for as much as $1.5 million. The median single-family price is higher than in Kingfield and on par with East Harriet. However, Vorachek says that the proximity to Interstate 35 West helps keep the median lower than in Lynnhurst. The market is highly competitive, with properties selling much faster than the national average. “I think, for move-in ready places, they go very quickly, and the demand is really strong,” Gross says.
Trails, lakes and community events offer plenty to do
Minnehaha Parkway runs along the bottom of the neighborhood. The shady trail starts at Minnehaha Regional Park in Hiawatha and stops at Lake Harriet, which is part of the 1,500-plus-acre Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Regional Park. There’s plenty to do, with amenities like:
The Lake Harriet Band Shell, which hosts the Music and Movies in the Park concert series
Beaches along Lake Harriet and Bde Maka Ska, where people relax by the water
Boat launches on Lake Harriet and Bde Maka Ska, which locals use for boats, kayaks and canoes
Lyndale Park Gardens, which includes the second-oldest rose garden in the country
15 miles of trails, where residents can hike, bike and ski
For something a little closer to home, residents go to Fuller Park, which has a playground, recreation center and a basketball court. Every summer, the Tangletown Neighborhood Association hosts the Summer Party & Movie in the Park.
Blocks away from Tangletown, Lake Harriet serves as a nature retreat in an urban landscape.

Minnehaha Parkway makes Tangletown bike-friendly
Like most of Minneapolis, Tangletown is very bikeable. “The majority of people will bike around their neighborhood, but they’re really just jumping on the [Minnehaha] Parkway to start riding through the Chain of Lakes to get around the city,” Vorachek says. Still, many people drive to get around the Twin Cities. Residents can hop onto Interstate 35 West, which connects with Interstate 94, to get across the Twin Cities quickly. Downtown Minneapolis is about 5 miles (15 minutes) away, while downtown Saint Paul is about 15 miles (30 minutes) away. Public transportation is also available, with Metro Transit buses stopping in the neighborhood.
Tangletown is in the flight path for Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, which is just over 5 miles away, so you can often hear planes overhead. “It’s just a characteristic of Tangletown,” Gross says. “Everybody knows it.”
Nearby local businesses include a garden center and a record store
Several local shops and restaurants, both in the neighborhood and surrounding communities like Kingfield, are within walking distance. You can:
Buy a plant or find landscaping inspiration at Tangletown Gardens
Peruse the new and used vinyl records and CDs at Roadrunner Records
Meet friends for brunch or get farm-fresh ingredients from Wise Acre Eatery
Enjoy a French pastry from Patisserie 46
Grab a burger and a malted milkshake from The Malt Shop
Residents can even walk to Kowalski’s Market along 54th Street, near the Washburn Library, to get groceries. “You have everything that you need for that old-school hyperlocal, 1950s kind of life, which is another big draw,” Gross says.
Tangletown Gardens is a community favorite with an iconic central building.
Roadrunner Records is an iconic shop off Nicollet Avenue.
