Designed with the periodic table in mind, an award-winning single-family home is on the market in a posh Maryland suburb.

Robert H. George Jr. and his wife, Vivian Rejebian, listed their single-family home at 7405 Helmsdale Road last week for $3.79 million. David Jameson, once highlighted in Architectural Digest for his contemporary designs, constructed the home in 2011, drawing inspiration from George’s salt-production company.

Jameson modeled the house after the geometry of a salt particle when viewed under a microscope. It led to the house’s nickname "NaCl" — for the elements on the periodic table that create salt: sodium and chlorine.

The house is three stories and includes four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. Sitting on half an acre, it spans 4,180 square feet in the Bethesda neighborhood of Bannockburn Estates, two miles outside downtown.

“It almost has a museum-like quality,” said Wendy Banner, the listing agent and a team member at Long & Foster Real Estate, an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “The house is built on an upslope ... It all looks like a canvas of green.”

George and Rejebian plan to downsize after living in the same residence for over a decade, Banner said, noting that they most enjoyed the two home offices on the main floor.

While the house’s modern style suits the couple, Banner said, it might not be to everyone’s liking. The exterior and interior require someone with an appreciation for clean lines, minimalism and windows.
