George Washington Elementary School is in the Vega neighborhood of the City of Burbank. Located off the corner of Winona Avenue and Lincoln Street, this public school has 463 students enrolled in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten through fifth grade. Staffed with 23 teachers, the school currently maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of 21-to-1. George Washington Elementary is a uniform-only school with Fridays allowed for Washington Spirit Wear. The Patriots Fundraising Committee raises $35,000 each year for school supplies, music programs and physical education. It also supports the Outdoor Science School, which is a special fifth grade program that allows students to learn about nature outside the classroom from field experts at the Thousand Pines Outdoor Science School in the Angeles National Forest. The school supports a variety of educational needs with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, an English Learner Program and a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. There is also the Washington Garden, which is a recently revived school garden where students can plant flowers and vegetables and take care of them. Test performances for reading and math are above expectations, and the Second Step Program boosts that success by teaching students skills in empathy, problem solving, emotion management and getting along with others. Even after the last bell, school continues with an After School Childcare program that runs until six p.m., includes one full hour of homework time and helps motivate students to succeed long after they've left George Washington Elementary.
