Open on Lincoln Street, the James A. Garfield School serves kindergarten through eighth grades with a public school education on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The James A. Garfield School is proud to offer children a secure and welcoming environment that promotes "great successes, positive choices, and increased learning." Unique opportunities to get involved at the James A. Garfield School include Project Lead the Way for kindergarteners through eighth graders, a STEM based initiative where students gain hands on experience building useful solutions for the community. In the past, Project Lead the Way has engaged students to build braces for people who had difficulty walking. Little Free Libraries allowed fifth graders to decorate and install five free libraries around school property for Bates-Hendricks residents to enjoy. An outdoor learning garden provides students with an organic way to pursue their studies and after school care for kindergarten through sixth graders is organized through the James A. Garfield School DAT program. The James A. Garfield Bears participate in volleyball, basketball, baseball, tennis, cheerleading and soccer from the fourth through the eighth grade, contributing to team spirit and a commitment to physical fitness. At the James A. Garfield School, children become responsible and respectful critical thinkers.

Really positive. We know this school has had a pretty bad rap for years, but we wanted our kids to be a part of a neighborhood school and we have seriously had no regrets.
