The Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language (MACL) serves about 475 students annually in K4 (4-year-old kindergarten) through eighth grade. Operated by Milwaukee Public Schools, it was the first school in the district to offer instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Although MACL is located in the Avenues West area of Milwaukee, transportation to and from the school is provided for students throughout the city. The unique academic program at MACL offers a standard curriculum while also offering instruction in Mandarin Chinese to all students for 30 minutes a day. There is also an emphasis on the arts, world languages, and understanding Asian heritage and history. In general, students are encouraged to learn about other countries and their cultures. The school houses the International Newcomer Center, which is designed to help middle school refugee students succeed academically while developing English language skills. Intramural sports such as basketball, flag football and soccer are offered for boys and girls, as are activities such as forensics, orchestra, and urban agriculture. The school day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and before-school child care is provided.
