Sussex Avenue School is a public school in the Fairmount neighborhood of Newark that serves children in prekindergarten through eighth grade. With the school motto, “Great Minds Under Construction,” this school focuses on the building blocks of learning to ensure that children are socially and academically prepared for the future. Educators at Sussex Avenue School encourage and challenge students to take risks and be creative in a safe and nurturing environment in order to become independent thinkers and active citizens in their communities. All students benefit from an engaging and well-rounded curriculum that includes English, mathematics, science, social studies and art. The students enjoy recess each day on the school’s unique playground, which was newly designed and reconstructed in 2014 to include several jungle gyms, a large blacktop track and a mini soccer field and basketball court. Accessibility is a top priority on the Sussex Renew Play Space, which also consists of a water park, an outdoor classroom, a butterfly garden, a vegetable garden, game tables, chess tables, synthetic turf, picnic tables and a sundial. With wonderful amenities and outstanding students, Sussex Avenue School is truly one of a kind.
