Mississippi Creative Arts Elementary, a public regional magnet school, teaches pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students with a focus on the visual and performing arts. Students receive visual arts, music, dance and drama education throughout the school day. The arts are integrated into traditional content areas of math, writing, reading and science.
Many of the teachers are working artists, giving students the benefits of their real-life knowledge of the field. The school encourages the practical application of artistic talent, and many students can participate in city performances. Students also have residency opportunities through community partnerships with the Ordway Center, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Center for Hmong Arts and Talent and the Children's Theatre Company.
Recognizing the importance of technology in today’s world, the school campus has Smartboards, computer labs and iPads available for student use. After-school and recreational activities are available at the school and at the nearby McDonough Recreation Center. Extended day programs include the Area Learning Center (ALC) program in addition to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, while Discovery Club is also a popular option.
Mississippi Creative Arts Elementary provides young learners with a unique set of opportunities that will help them to grow and develop their talents while they thrive academically with the support of the school's motivated staff.
