Beachside living near Downtown
Alamitos Beach offers a blend of seaside serenity and metropolitan dynamism that’s hard to find elsewhere in Long Beach, yet somehow it remains one of the most budget-friendly options in Long Beach. “It’s a great place to live if you want to be able to walk downtown or to the beach,” says local Realtor Shannon Paul of Zaia Estates, who has worked in the area for over a decade. “They have Yoga on the Bluff at Bluff Park on Saturdays, and there’s the weekly farmers market at Bixby Park. There are always local events going on in the neighborhood.”
Located just east of the city center, the neighborhood is also known for its vibrant nightlife scene, mostly concentrated along Fourth Street and Broadway. These streets are home to many of the most popular LGBTQ+ bars in Long Beach, along with some of the top restaurants in town.

Broadway and Fourth Street
Just a short stroll from the beach, East Broadway has long offered some of the best nightlife in Long Beach. It’s home to a number of the most popular gay bars in Long Beach, including iconic spots like The Falcon and The Brit. It’s also home to a range of highly rated restaurants, including stylish Italian eatery Ellie’s and misleadingly named sushi joint Blue Bird Haus.
Fourth Street — aka Retro Row — is dotted with quirky vintage shops and boutiques. Fourth Street is also home to the Art Theatre, an iconic cinema that opened in 1924. Locals looking to pick up groceries and other necessities usually head Downtown, which borders Alamitos Beach to the west and is home to multiple major supermarkets and chain retailers.
Ace Hardware on 4th Street is a great local resource for projects and supplies.
Bluebird Haus is a local sushi restaurant featuring vegan dishes.

Historic condos
Housing in the area is mostly made up of condos and apartments, though single-family homes — mostly bungalows — are relatively common farther from the beach. Along the coast itself, vintage apartment buildings dating back to the 1920s stand alongside their more modern counterparts. With their art-deco elements, these historic structures add a touch of retro flair to the neighborhood, memorializing its colorful past while contributing to its vibrant present. The neighborhood’s streets are lined with brightly colored buildings and palm trees, creating a thoroughly beachy ambiance. Condos go for $500,000 to $1 million, depending on their size and proximity to the beach. Bungalows a few blocks inland typically go for between $1 million and $1.5 million.
The trails along the beach in Alamitos Beach are perfect for a morning (or afternoon) stroll.

The beach
Stretched alongside Ocean Boulevard, the neighborhood’s namesake beach features miles of sandy beaches and recreational opportunities, including the popular Shoreline Way bike path, which runs 7.5 miles from Downtown to Alamitos Peninsula. While not quite as scenic or surfable as the west-facing beaches in South Bay and Orange County Alamitos Beach is a popular hangout for locals, who rarely have to worry about crowds of tourists blowing up their spot. The neighborhood is also home to Bixby Park, a small but well-maintained green space that hosts a popular farmers market every Tuesday evening.

Oceanside events and attractions
Ocean Boulevard hosts a number of major events every year, most notably the Long Beach Pride Parade in May, the Long Beach Marathon in October and the Acura Grand Prix, which has been held every spring since 1975 and is the longest-running street race in North America.
The neighborhood is also just a couple blocks away from the Museum of Latin American Art, and the world-renowned Aquarium of the Pacific, home to over 500 marine species, from zebra sharks to a giant Pacific octopus.

Getting around and out of Long Beach
Alamitos Beach is one of the most walkable and bikeable neighborhoods in Long Beach, and arguably Greater Los Angeles. The neighborhood has an impressive walkability score of 96 and a bike score of 92. Long Beach Transit also runs a number of routes through the neighborhood, offering direct connections to spots throughout the city. The neighborhood is also less than a mile from the Metro A Line’s 1st Street Station, which runs all the way up to Downtown LA. On the downside, it is a bit of a drive to the nearest interstate, and getting out of town can be a hassle for those commuting to other cities, particularly during rush hour. LAX, Downtown LA, Anaheim and Santa Ana are all about 25 miles from the neighborhood, but drive times can vary wildly depending on the time of day, from 30 minutes to well over an hour.
